Terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin appellation

The wine-growing commune of Gevrey is a fairly large town with over 3,000 inhabitants. It is located 15 km from Dijon, in the Côte d'Or region. The wines produced here include 9 Grands Crus and 26 Premier Cru and Village appellations. The vineyards cover 405 ha. Most of the Premiers Crus are planted on sloping soils composed of Jura marl mixed with red alluvium. The 9 Grands Crus, on the other hand, are grown on shallow soils made up of hard Bajocian limestone. The quality of the wines diminishes as you approach the alluvial plain to the east, on the side of the RN74

Our selection of the best Gevrey Chambertin producers:

-Armand Rousseau: this estate of over 15 hectares was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by its namesake Armand Rousseau. The vineyards are divided into 8.5 ha of Grands Crus and 3.8 ha of Premiers Crus. The limestone and clay-limestone soils are ideal for vine growth. The estate also adopts a policy of low yields and meticulous control over vinification. The result is wines that are concentrated, powerful, elegant, racy and full-bodied, with good ageing potential.
-Dugat-Py: Loïc Dugat is the 13th generation of winemakers at this estate, which comprises 5 hectares of vineyards including Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites. Most of the vines on this organic estate are very old, around 65 years old. The key to this estate's success in producing extremely elegant, well-balanced wines lies in the low-intervention vinification process and the age of the vines. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering. This is an estate to keep an eye on, as it has gone from strength to strength over the last 10 years.
-Domaine Trapet: the manager of this wine estate is now in the 7th generation of the Trapet family. The 18-hectare estate has Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites in Chapelle-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin and the mighty Chambertin. The wines from this estate are the epitome of elegance and purity. They are wonderfully fragrant, with notes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant, spices, cedar and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied, with a fairly firm structure and ripe tannins. The Chambertin Grand Cru is the most sought-after of this producer's crus.
-Faiveley: this 115-hectare estate based in Nuits St-Georges is one of the largest in Burgundy. The history of this estate, which boasts some of the most famous crus appellations, goes back almost two centuries. It produces 54 different wines, the best known of which are Bourgogne Grand cru and Premier cru. This cru, made from 100% pinot noir grapes, stands out for its earthy notes, complex nose, firm tannins and opulent palate of fruit, spice, oak and vanilla. A must-taste!
-Prieuré Roch: this wine estate was created in 1988 by Henri-Fréderic Roch, a member of the Leroy family. It currently owns 14 hectares of vineyards, mainly in Côte-des-Nuits. These properties include vineyards of renowned Grands Crus and Premiers Crus such as Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze. Organic growing practices and low-yield production are part and parcel of this producer's philosophy. His wines are delicious, with aromas of ripe red fruit, dark chocolate, oak or grilled herbs, depending on the vintage. They have spicy, red fruit flavours or herbaceous or spicy cinnamon flavours with a pleasant finish.
-Perrot Minot: this 12-hectare estate is run by Christophe Perrot-Minot, the 4th generation of winemakers. Its production includes 7 Grands Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Clos Vougeot and 14 Premiers Crus from Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The house style is an aromatic, complex, mineral wine with beautiful layers of flavour and an impressive, long, slightly bitter finish.
-Jacky Truchot: the legendary Jacky Truchot founded this estate in 1978 before selling it to his neighbour, David Dubond. Although the estate has left little trace, its wines have remained under the radar of many collectors because of their elegance and refinement.
-Geantet Pansiot: this estate's 12 ha of vineyards are farmed using integrated methods, half of which are in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin and 3 ½ ha in Burgundy. The wines of this 4th generation family are generous, powerful and refined, in the image of true Gevrey-Chambertin.
-Tortochot: the 12 ha of this estate are run by Brigitte and Chantal Tortochot, who are now 4th generation wine producers. Chambertin AOC and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru are the main wines produced by this estate. The wines produced by this estate offer excellent value for money compared with other estates of the same quality. These are rare, pure, fresh, balanced and refined wines that will quickly find their place in the cellars of discerning collectors.
-Domaine de la Vougeraie: this 37-hectare estate in Prémeaux boasts an enviable portfolio of some thirty biodynamically-farmed appellations. It produces 6 Grands Crus, including Musigny, Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. Its red wines are medium garnet in colour, with raspberry, cherry, wet stone and forest floor aromas. On tasting, they have a velvety texture thanks to the tannins that coat the cherry and wet earth flavours with excellent acidity. The finish is long and pleasant.
-Dujac: the 17 ha of this estate, founded by Jacques Seysses in 1967, include 7 parcels of Grands Crus and some magnificent Premiers Crus, including Malconsorts in Vosne and Aux Combottes in Gevrey. The 12-hectare family vineyard produces Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and village appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. 80% of production is exported. As a result, its products are often out of stock, as they are offered in limited quantities. Its wines have a seductive, refined style, with an intense, generous nose, silky, ripe tannins and a juicy, spicy palate. They have good ageing potential.
-Ponsot: a biodynamically farmed estate producing one of Burgundy's finest red wines. Its wines have a fantastic, fruity, tarry nose. The palate is concentrated, spicy and well-structured, with a little tannin and a deep finish.

-Camus père et fils: this estate already existed in the 18th century. Today, it produces Grands Crus and Premier Crus. Its wines have a mineral, discreet or textured nose. Intense on the palate, with impressive length and penetrating or sustained acidity.
