Geographical situation and soil of Cornas appellation

This appellation area is located on steep hillsides with ideal east and south-east exposure. The temperate winds regularly sweep across the terraces at altitudes of 125 to 400 metres. The high levels of sunshine and the climate favour the production of wines with character. The AOC is produced from 110 hectares of vines around the commune of Cornas. This is in the Ardèche department, about 7 km from Valence. The appellation produces only red wines, as does Côte Rôtie. Syrah is the only grape variety used. The terroir of this appellation is characterised by soils of filtering granite and sandy-clay, chalky soils with a high iron oxide content. Cornas wines have a slightly old-fashioned style, with an earthy, vegetal and animal nose and rough, austere, rustic tannins with good length. With age, they become more supple, with rounder, more balanced tannins. This is the type of wine that goes perfectly with leg of lamb, grilled beef, barbecued lamb kebabs..

Our selection of the best Cornas wines

-Auguste Clape: this winemaker excels at making fine wines with character. He owns 11 acres of prime plots on the steep hillside surrounding the village. Some of his vines are over 100 years old. The wine is made in the traditional way, in used wooden barrels. This produces wines with a splendid opaque and impenetrable colour. However, with a few years' ageing, the tannins become softer and the bottle gives off seductive aromas of creamy, peppery black fruit. On tasting, the wine develops more complex flavours. This type of wine stands out for its enormous ageing potential, but you can also try them when they are young and fresh. Take a tour of the site to choose from some of this producer's finest wines.
-Thierry Allemand: although this winemaker's plots lie on granite subsoil with little clay, the terroir benefits from optimum sunshine. After years of patience in acquiring land, this winegrower was able to create his own estate, which covers 5 hectares. His wines are aged partly in stainless steel and partly in used oak. They are then racked and bottled unfiltered. His wines also have the masculine, powerful and distinctive Cornas character. Older vintages of 1997 and 1996 from this producer are available on this site.
