The Côtes du Rhône is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world, since the medieval Popes grew grapes on the region's pebbly soils. Established in 1937, this appellation covers all wines made on the right and left banks of the Rhône, divided into southern and northern regions. Classification and terroir of Côtes du Rhône appellation

The Côtes du Rhône appellation, which covers around 40,000 hectares, could rival Bordeaux as France's second largest wine-growing region. The appellation comprises 171 communes and over 5,000 producers, cooperatives and merchants. The wines are classified into 3 levels
- first level AOC Côtes du Rhône

- second level AOC Côtes du Rhône village which is subdivided into two according to the appellation area of the communes

- and higher level wines known as "crus", such as AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Taste and price vary according to the classification. The appellation allows winemakers to choose from 21 grape varieties, the majority of which are red. Wines can be made into reds, rosés or whites. The colour of the wine must respect the number of grape varieties and their blend. The crus are planted in the best granite mountain terroirs in the north and the rocky valleys in the south. It should be noted that the word "cru" does not often appear on Rhône wine labels. The Côtes du Rhône Villages classification, on the other hand, represents vineyards with limited yields in accordance with the various specifications and a higher alcohol content. These are affordable wines designed for laying down. They go perfectly with dishes such as leg of lamb or fillet of duck.

Our selection of the best producers in the Côtes du Rhône appellation

-Emmanuel Reynaud: the Château Rayas estate belongs to Emmanuel Reynaud. The estate's 12 hectares of vineyards face north-east, and the soil is sandy and chalky, or clayey in places. Despite this rather unfavourable climate, the famous Emmanuel Reynaud has succeeded in producing luxurious, sensual, fresh wines that offer an unforgettable tasting experience, with silky tannins and a long, kirschy, spicy finish. Some of his wines can be drunk straight from the bottle, but some need to wait a few years to obtain a balanced, elegant, intense and complex wine. Take advantage of the special offers on this site to buy these exceptional wines at the best prices!
-Domaine Jamet: Jean-Paul Jamet and his wife manage this estate of 8 hectares of vineyards divided into Côte-Rôtie, Côtes-du-Rhône and vin du pays. Their wines come in a variety of styles. They can express great purity and concentration, with intense levels of ripe, sweet, dark fruit and animal aromas. On the palate, the fleshy, powerful wines reveal multiple layers of fruit and dusty tannins. We recommend waiting 10 to 15 years to allow the wine to evolve and improve. Other bottles may also reveal a complex nose with aromas of cherries, violets, spices, fat and cloves, with a supple texture and a refreshing finish.
