Domaine Jean Marc Roulot

Domaine Jean Marc Roulot: history and quality wines

Jean-Marc Roulot, the owner of the eponymous estate in the heart of Beaune, decided not to pursue his career as an actor in order to take up his family legacy. This choice has enabled him to bring international recognition to the estate, while at the same time ensuring the success of his wines at auction. The estate produces one of the three most popular brands of white Burgundy in the Côte de Beaune. Discover the history of the estate, its cuvées and its best wines in this guide.

History of Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot

The history of this exceptional 15-hectare estate dates back to the 18th century. Indeed, the Roulot family had already been in the village since 1789. But it was towards the end of the 1950s that Guy Roulot (1929-1982) and his wife Géneviève came up with the idea of turning their vision for the estate into reality by increasing the size of the vineyards. At the time, the estate had just joined the elite in Burgundy wine-making. Following the tragic death of his father, the heir, Jean-Marc Roulot, initially took time to take control of the estate. The reason for this was that he was heavily involved in his acting career and didn't have the time to run the family estate. Jean-Marc loved the theatre and trained at the Paris Conservatoire. A relative, Frank Grux, managed the estate from 1984 to 1989. It was in 1989 that Jean-Marc's dormant passion for winegrowing was reawakened, and he decided to continue his father's work by taking over with Michèle. His first instinct was to implement a qualitative restructuring process by buying and selling vineyards. This enabled him to acquire the Narvaux, Clos de Bouchère, Clos de la Baronne, Clotot and other vineyards. Thanks to his licence to buy grapes, he is also able to produce wines for the wine trade, when the quality of the grapes is good. He also made brandies and liqueurs using local produce such as pears and apricots. There are 17 cuvées in all, of which only 2 are red. Some of his cuvées receive less media coverage than others, but connoisseurs appreciate his wines for their precise, racy style and their ability to develop with age.

Quality of Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot wines and winemaking process

The estate's fifteen hectares of vineyards have been farmed organically since 1999. Most of the vines are Chardonnay, but there is also some Pinot Noir for the red wines. The calcareous-clay and rocky nature of the soil means that the wines have good ageing potential. To produce silky wines with great fullness on the palate and good acidity, Jean-Marc Roulot chooses not to wait until the grapes are too ripe to harvest them. They are then subjected to a rigorous selection process before undergoing alcoholic or malolactic fermentation. The wines are then matured in stainless steel vats for 6 months and in oak barrels for 12 months to polish and round out the tannins and retain the purity of the juice. The estate stands out for its ability to produce crystal-clear wines without compromising the quality and richness of the flavours and aromas. It produces appellations such as Bourgogne Aligoté, Bourgogne Chardonnay, Village d'Auxay-Duresses, Mersault village, Mersault Meix-Chavaux, Mersault Luchet, Mersault Perrières etc.
Domaine Roulot is a renowned Burgundy wine and brandy producer, run by Jean-Marc Roulot. They also produce apricot, lemon and pear liqueurs. They practise organic farming and their lemon liqueur, "Citron du Roulot", is very popular.

Overview of the estate's wines

The estate's wines are renowned for their purity, their floral and mineral nose with a lovely attack on the palate and an incredibly long, acidic finish. But as one of the most important vineyards in the Mersault appellation, the style can also vary from one vintage to another. Whatever the case, the estate's young wines have a fine capacity to age gracefully
-Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot Aligote 2015: a white Burgundy that already seems to be in place, so perfectly balanced is it after decanting for half an hour. The nose reveals pretty notes of hazelnut, flowers, lime and unripe tropical fruit. The palate benefits from flavours of white or green fruit with a hint of acidity. A short finish. This wine is perfect for an aperitif with friends, or even for everyday drinking. But it also has good cellaring potential. This wine is in the same price range as Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot Auxey Duresses Rouge 1er cru. This is a smooth, expressive red wine with pleasant aromas and a long finish.
-Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot Mersault Bouchères 2016: a white premier cru with a lemon colour and delicate, well-defined aromas. After an hour's decanting, it reveals notes of peach, grapefruit, apricot, toast and walnut. The acidity is remarkable, with a long finish. A nectar of the gods that can reach its full potential after two or three decades. A wine on special offer for collectors and connoisseurs.
-Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot Mersault Clos de Bouchères 2012: a powerful, rich white 1er cru for the 2012 vintage. After decanting for around twenty minutes, it reveals fruity aromas, fresh citrus fruit, herbaceous notes and creamy minerals. The palate has ripe fruit flavours with a generous body. This is the type of wine that should grace your table for special occasions. Alternatively, if you want to impress your guests, opt for the fabulous Domaine Jean-Marc Mersault les Charmes 2016. Another white 1er cru, a warm vintage, very beautiful, very powerful, dense and full-bodied with impressive length.
-Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot Mersault Perrières 2008: A vintage white 1er cru salivating in all its splendour and potential. A ripe, well-balanced wine with exceptionally rich aromas and flavours representing the power of a Mersault combined with an astonishing minerality due to the singularity of the climate. A rare find on special offer on this site, to be recommended to lovers of elite wines.
