History of the Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier estate

Frédéric Mugnier, a Dijon liqueur-maker, founded this estate in 1863. The estate extends over some twenty hectares between Chambolles-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Frédéric Mugnier's descendants ran the estate and the liqueur house until 1949. At that time, the economic difficulties of the post-war period forced the great-grandson, Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, to sell the liquor factory and rent out the farm. The business was then reduced to a large wine house in Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 1978, he took over management of the farm until his death in 1985. Today, his son Frédéric Mugnier succeeds him at the helm, surrounded by the estate's team. Under his aegis, the part of the estate that had been leased for 53 years has been returned to the family fold. This renaissance phase has seen the Mugnier estate grow from 4 to 14 hectares. The Clos de la Maréchale, a parcel of around 9 hectares, was then reintegrated into Nuits-Saint-Georges. One hectare of this parcel was devoted to the production of white wines, the volumes of which were kept secret. The estate also acquired large new vats. Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier uses the "Château-Chambolle Musigny" label to market its wines

Terroir and grape varieties

The estate produces around 60,000 bottles a year from its 14 hectares of vines. The average age of the vines is 60 years. The winemaker and owner of this wine estate, the scientist Fréderic Mugnier, markets lively, well-balanced wines that will age in the bottle, as well as young wines. The grape varieties are 100% Pinot Noir for the red wines and 100% Chardonnay for the white wines, with an average vine age of 60 years. The grapes are harvested by hand. The estate's best terroirs are Musigny, Bonnes-mares, les Amoureuses and les Fuées. The owner has stopped selling Musigny until further notice to allow the bottles to age in the cellars. But some of these rarities destined for long ageing are available for sale to wine lovers. Returning to the terroir of the estate, the Musigny vines are well positioned between two deep valleys, facing the Alps and above Clos Vougeot. The vines are protected from the mountain winds. The soils are draining, with a good gravelly composition and little clay. The cool, dry conditions and plenty of sunshine favour the Musigny terroir and give its wines a strong personality

The qualities of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier wines

The wines produced before the year 2000 stand out for their exuberant character and their multiple flavours of subjugating intensity. No competitor can match these ruby-coloured Grands Crus, with their incredibly complex nose and velvety, powerful palate. Later vintages are more delicate, with fresh, vibrant aromas and a hint of acidity. A seductive character that makes it worthy of long ageing.
-Domaine J-F Mugnier Bonnes mares 1988: this grand cru red, with its capsule and label in perfect condition, is a veritable elixir that will delight your taste buds. Its soft, deliciously fragrant Pinot Noir nose will surprise you with its notes of undergrowth, earth and complex aromas. A very succulent wine with great depth and a trace of tannin on the finish. A rare Grand Cru that will impress your guests on any special occasion.
-Domaine J-F Mugnier Bonnes mares 2016: this Grand Cru is one of the estate's most famous wines. It is a full-bodied, concentrated, full and layered wine. It will win you over with its deep, savoury fruit core and long, precise finish. It is also a wine for laying down.
-Domaine Mugnier Chambolle Musigny les Amoureuses 1990: a red Premier Cru made from old vines planted in the 1950s. A wine that offers the cream of Burgundy's great wines at their best: complex, vinous, rich in aroma and with immense ageing potential. A very easy-drinking wine. The capsule and label are intact.
-Domaine Mugnier Chambolle Musigny les Amoureuses 2015: Another premier cru in perfect condition. The producer describes it as a vintage that meets the definition of a great year, but whose expressions will only be fully revealed after long ageing. The wine has a beautiful colour and pronounced aromas of cedar and pine. If you want to enjoy it without waiting a few decades, pair it with fish, red meat or poultry.
-Domaine Mugnier Saint-Georges clos de la Maréchale 2004: a Premier Cru with a light purple colour and an impeccable exterior. A very pleasant bottle to give as a gift. This ripe wine offers a pleasant tasting experience with its aromas of herbaceous red fruit, earthy or vegetal notes, medium body and good length on the palate. To make the most of its aromas, breathe in the wine without pouring it. Like all old vintages, the bottle should be served between 16°C and 18°C.
-Domaine Mugnier Saint-Geroges clos de la Maréchale 2018: an exceptional red Premier Cru from a Pinot Noir plantation over 50 years old. A lovely, wonderfully fragrant bouquet with notes of black tea, rose petals and juniper. The body is fairly full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. If you're looking for a quality wine that will stand the test of time, this bottle is to be recommended.
