Presentation of Château cos d'Estournel, Saint-Estèphe producer
The emblematic Château cos d'Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe on the highest hills of the Médoc in Gironde. The first stone of the estate was laid in 1762. Construction was completed in 1853. The 91-hectare estate inherited the vineyards near the village of Cos in 1811. This enabled it to export its products to distant countries such as India. The Chinese pagodas in its cellars illustrate the success of this feat in the history of the estate. But in 1852, the owner, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, crushed under the weight of debt, had to sell the estate to Fernand Ginestet, himself co-owner of Château Margaux. The heirs continued to manage the estate until 1998. Then, the estate was once again bought by the Merlaut family. After a few years, the Merlaut family sold the estate. Michel Reybier, an entrepreneur from Lyon and one of France's richest men (who survived a tragic plane crash in 1994) took over the château in his turn. The industrialist has restored the buildings to their original appearance. And since 2017, he has been in charge of the management of cos d'Estournel
Terroir of Cos d'Estournel
The château has 91 hectares of vines, with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The average lifespan of the vines planted on most of the plots is 35 years. In fact, the word cos means pebble hill in Gascon. The terroir is therefore characterised by an accumulation of gravel and chalky clay. This balanced composition enables the vines to withstand periods of severe drought by drawing water from the clay table. It also gives Saint-Estèphe wines a unique, high-quality composition, guaranteeing a good wine for laying down. The company, which spares no effort to produce racy, powerful wines worthy of its classification, decided to acquire a new stave-oak vat room in 2008. As far as the region's climatic conditions are concerned, the estate enjoys a mild, rainy climate at the start of the season, plenty of sunshine with abundant rainfall in summer, and dry, warm winds during the harvest. All these conditions are conducive to the ripening of the grapes and also contribute to its many nuances
Characteristics about AOC Saint-Estèphe appellation
The Saint-Estèphe appellation is a red wine classified as a "still wine". It benefits from the French AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée) label and the European PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label. The wines produced by Château Cos d'Estournel are among the Grands Crus, France's finest wines. The vintages of Cos d'Estournel wines sold on this site range from 1953 to 2013. These are opulent, voluptuous wines that fascinate with their complex aromas and a harmonious, powerful palate of great finesse
-We recommend Château Cos d'Estournel 1975 to connoisseurs and wine lovers. An intriguing, secretive red wine that reveals itself slowly on the palate. A treasure with an unctuous texture that tells stories of faraway lands while awakening infinite sensations. A true ode to the heritage of Cos d'Estournel. A wine that goes perfectly with chef's dishes such as roast leg of lamb, duck breast stuffed with foie gras, but also with classic dishes such as barbecued chicken, etc.
-The red wine Château cos d'Estournel 2011 magnum, meanwhile, reveals a harmonious combination of exceptional richness and surprising freshness, with an elegant base that gives way to a discreet, mineral finish. Goes well with meat gratins, stews, cheese spreads and pizzas.
-Promotional wines such as Château cos d'Estournel 1998 are also a good investment, offering excellent value for money. This applies to all the wines produced by this estate. The 1998 vintage continues to stand out for its liveliness, balanced by an unexpected sweetness. Typical of Saint-Estèphe wines. A wine with enough tannin to offer you a unique tasting experience. Enjoy with beef or game.
-As for the younger vintages, from 2010 to 2013, these are fine juices, controlled in their freshness with a length on the palate that will leave you wanting more. We advise you to go slowly. These wines will reach their full potential over the years.
