Terroir of Aloxe Corton appellation

This Côte de Beaune AOC has existed since 1938. Its vineyards extend over an area of around 122 hectares, south of the Corton mountain. The terroir of the Aloxe Corton appellation is characterised by reddish or chalky, slightly clayey soils containing flint debris at an altitude of 200 to 300 metres. This terroir also has a good potassium and phosphoric acid content. The stony and marly soils, depending on the location, are favourable to the production of supple, elegant, fine wines, while the marly soils produce firm, complex wines. The vines face due east. The climate is temperate with continental trends. The variety of soil types, drainage, grape variety and climate give a wide range of wines. Wines from the south, for example, are more structured and solid, while wines from the north are more supple with fruity aromas. The vineyards of this appellation include 14 Premiers Crus, the best known of which are Les Clos des Maréchaudes, Fournières and Valozières. The illustrious Grands Crus Corton and Corton-Charlemagne straddle the commune's 3 geographical areas: Aloxe Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses.

The Aloxe-Corton appellation is a wine-growing region in the Côtes de Beaune and Nuits in Burgundy, France. It is renowned for its red wines made mainly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. The wines of Aloxe-Corton are often considered to be mountain wines because they come from the climates on the Corton mountain. The most prestigious vintages are produced in the Clos du Chapitre by Domaine Chevalier Père. Aloxe-Corton wines are particularly well suited to accompanying red meats.

The best producers of Aloxe Corton appellation

This village appellation includes red wines (around 98.5% of production) and white wines (1.5%). The reds are fairly dark in colour, with deep ruby, garnet or crimson hues depending on the climate. When young, they have red and black fruit aromas. With age, the aromas evolve towards jasmine and candied fruit, with notes of truffle, mushroom, leather and cinnamon. The red wines are powerful, robust, aromatic and refined, with vibrant acidity. After a few years in the cellar, they become fuller-bodied with velvety tannins. These are wines for laying down
-Coche dury: this estate has almost 9 hectares of vines on small plots spread over 6 communes in the Côte de Beaune region. It favours a policy of very low yields and meticulous vinification. His red wines are fragrant, intense and powerful, with good ageing potential. They are full-bodied, concentrated wines with well-balanced acidity. The estate is renowned for its fine Mersault wines and its Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, not forgetting its white Burgundy. The diversity of the wines in terms of aroma, consistency and complexity of flavour depends on the terroir and viticulture. Coche Dury is one of those estates that expresses its terroir elegantly.
-Faiveley: this 115-hectare family estate in the village of Saint-Geroges is one of the largest in Burgundy. The majority of its vineyards are located in prestigious crus appellations such as Côte de Beaune and Côte des Nuits. The estate produces around 54 different wines, some of which are Grands Crus (10 ha of vineyards) and Premiers Crus (25 ha). The estate's red wines are distinguished by their complexity, firm tannins and earthy, mineral aftertaste. When tasted, they reveal flavours of red fruit, spices, vanilla and oak, with a pleasant coconut finish.
-Louis Latour: this estate was founded in 1797. Through 11 generations, this prestigious estate has increased its planted vineyard area. Each year, it produces around 150 different wines, and 8.5 million bottles. The estate covers 48 hectares, 27 of which are Grands Crus (17 Grands Crus de Corton and 10 Grands Crus Corton-Charlemagne). Its red wines are controversial. They are heated to 70°C for 3 seconds before bottling. On tasting, these wines are round, quite fruity and slightly creamy, with a sophisticated, fresh palate and good acidity. The wines may have a hint of minerality and herbaceous notes. Corton-Charlemagne, on the other hand, is a wine with little expressive aroma and strong tannins when young, but which will develop a creamy richness and aromatic complexity after a few years' cellaring. This is the type of wine that appeals to both the drinker and the connoisseur.
-Bonneau du Martray: the wines from this estate were served at a private birthday dinner for Queen Elizabeth II of England. This estate belongs to the American Enos Stanley Kroenke after it was sold by Bault de la Morinière, an heir to the estate. The latter has made efforts to improve the quality of the vines and winemaking. His 24 ha of vineyards produce two Grands Crus: Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. This flagship wine boosts the estate's international reputation. The wines from this estate are extremely fine, yet powerful, with exceptional aromatic qualities and velvety tannins. Intense wines that do not saturate.
-Bouchard père et fils: this estate was bought by Champagne house Joseph Henriot in 1995. It is one of the oldest and largest winegrowing estates in Burgundy. The estate covers 130 hectares, divided into 74 hectares of Premier Cru and 12 Grand Cru. It includes prestigious appellations such as Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Bonnes-Mares, Mersault-Perrière, etc. Its red wines are renowned for their firm character and great expression, while the whites are fresh and generous on the palate.
