Beaucastel: exceptional wines

Like all the estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaucastel is as famous as its wines are exceptional. Domaine Beaucastel is run by the Perrin family. It is one of only three estates in the Rhône Valley to vinify all 13 grape varieties represented in its appellation. While quantity is important (300,000 bottles of red wine a year, and 30,000 bottles of white wine), so is quality. To achieve this, Château Beaucastel uses organic farming methods. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and vinified separately for each variety
The result is one of the finest wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard stretches over a hundred hectares on pebbly soil, with a strong presence of Mourdèvre. Remarkably, Roussanne is also present, which is surprising for this appellation. However, Beaucastel expresses itself admirably with this grape: for example, the 2016 Vieilles Vignes is incredible in its depth, and one of the best examples of Roussanne in the Rhône Valley. The other bottles are all about fruit and full, fleshy flavours. The price range is wide, with Beaucastel starting at €70 and rising to €1,400.
