Terroir of Morey Saint-Denis

This French wine-growing village in the Côte-d'Or commune is located some 15 km south of Dijon, at an altitude of between 220 and 270 m. The Grands Crus and Premiers Crus are located in the middle of the slopes, while the vines are planted on the piedmont, the lowest and highest slopes. To the east, Route Nationale No. 74 separates the vineyards from the Bresse plain. The vineyards of AOC Morey Saint-Denis have several climats classified as Grands crus, Premiers crus and crus. Facing east, the vines grow on well-drained clay-limestone and oolitic limestone soils dating from the Jurassic period. Below the village, the orientation is different. This makes the soil more marly. The village produces both red and dry white wines.
The vast majority of wines produced under this appellation are Pinot Noir. Only a few plots are planted with Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc. A total of 5% of production is made up of white wines. Wine styles vary according to the composition of the terroir, the type of grape variety used and the vinification process. Red wines have a deep, brilliant ruby-red colour, with red and black fruit aromas and powerful tannins. When young, they have great finesse. As they age, they become fuller-bodied, with 'wild' scents of truffle and game. The white wines are very light in colour. They are perfectly balanced, powerful, opulent and supple with floral notes. The Premiers Crus, meanwhile, offer more complex aromas of leather, moss and game on a remarkably long finish.
The wines of this appellation are halfway between the masculine wines of Gevrey-Chambertin and the more feminine wines of Chambolle-Musigny. These are red wines for laying down, revealing their full potential after 1 or 2 decades. But the white wines have less ageing potential.

The Morey-Saint-Denis appellation is a wine-growing region in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, France. It is renowned for its top-quality red wines made mainly from Pinot Noir grapes, and for its top-quality red wines made mainly from Pinot Noir grapes. Morey-Saint-Denis wines are often considered premier cru wines. The most prestigious vintages are produced in the Clos de Vougeot by Joseph Drouhin. Morey-Saint-Denis wines are particularly well-suited to accompany black fruit and red meats.

Our selection of the best Morey-Saint-Denis producers:

-Ponsot: this estate was founded in 1872 and is currently run by Rose Marie Ponsot. It owns around 13 hectares of vineyards, the largest of which is located in a place called Le Clos de la Roche. The estate produces two premier crus: Chambolle-Musigny les Charmes and Morey Saint-Denis cuvée des Alouettes. The former are supple-textured, rich wines with cherry and mineral notes on a long finish, while the Cuvée des Alouettes is a sumptuous, intense wine with ripe fruit notes and a long finish. The estate also produces an extensive range of Grands Crus offering a variety of aromas, as well as a unique white, the Morey-St.-Denis Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes, made from 100% aligoté.
-Jacky Truchot: the winemaker who owned this estate retired in 2005. But the 7-hectare vineyards have left behind some prestigious wines that are now fetching top prices. These are elegant, romantic, refined wines, with a delicate bouquet of strawberries, red berries and hints of undergrowth, yet they are ripe, graceful and exquisite. The estate is renowned for the extraordinary purity and fragrance of its pinot noir.
-Domaine des Lambrays: this estate dates back to 1363, but was not promoted to Grand Cru status until 1981. The Freund family made significant improvements to the quality of the wines after acquiring the estate in 1996. Since 2014, however, Clos de Lambrays has been one of the LVMH group's wine estates. The grape varieties are 100% pinot noir. The 8.84 hectare vineyards produce a Grand Cru with a wonderful combination of balance, power and great finesse.
-Georges Roumier: this estate was founded in 1924, but bottling did not begin until 21 years later. This estate is known for its Musigny and Bonnes-mares. The former are aromatic wines bursting with berry flavours and citrus notes, with velvety tannins. The Bonnes-mares, on the other hand, are very sweet, strong wines with a fine minerality. Georges Roumier is also renowned for his Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne, which has a complex bouquet of flowers, fruit and honey, and good acidity. He also offers Charmes Chambertin, a velvety, silky red wine, and Ruchottes Chambertin, an energetic pinot noir with scents of spice, fruit, liquorice and fine minerality.
-Mommessin: this company based in Quicié-en-Beaujolais produces great wines from Gamay, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. These are quality wines with a style that combines tradition, refinement and elegance with a surprising mouthfeel.
-Domaine Hubert Lignier: this estate is renowned for its structured, fine and concentrated wines. Its 8.3 ha produce 32 attractive, fleshy wines, including 3 Grands Crus, 11 Premiers Crus and 10 Villages. The Grands Crus include Griotte Chambertin, a wine with notes of violets and roses and fruity flavours. Other famous wines include Bourgogne aligoté, Saint Romain Blanc Sous le Château, Fixin blanc, Bourgogne Passetoutgrain "Aux Poirelots" and Bourgogne Rouge "Grand Chaliot". Some of these wines can rival some of the elite appellations in amplitude, power and complexity.
-Armand Rousseau: this estate, founded in the 20th century, also produces wines of remarkable quality from its 15.33 hectares of vineyards. These are Grands crus, premiers crus and village appellation wines. It produces 6 emblematic Grands Crus, including Chambertin, Charmes Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Beze, Ruchottes Chambertin, Clos de la Roche and Mazy Chambertin. These are elegant, racy, concentrated wines with good ageing potential.
