Terroir of Auxey Duresses

According to historical sources, this wine-growing region to the south-west of Beaune is one of Burgundy's Celtic and Gallo-Roman vineyards. It was once an annex of the Abbey of Cluny, producing both grapes and cereals. The Auxey Duresses appellation produces 700,000 litres of wine each year from an area of 1.15 km2, 70% of which is pinot noir. In the past, a large part of the production was bottled by the winegrowers themselves under the Côte de Beaune-Village appellation. But consumer interest in value-for-money Burgundies has prompted many winegrowers to bottle their wines under the Auxey-Duresses appellation
The Auxey-Duresses appellation currently boasts 9 Premiers Crus from its 93 hectares of Pinot Noir vines. Its slopes face south and south-east. The Premier Crus are all planted on the southern slopes of the Bourdon mountain. The terroir is characterised by stony marl-limestone soils that give the vineyard minerality and vigour. The climate is continental, with very cold winters and hot summers. These are fairly favourable climatic conditions for viticulture

Our selection of the best Auxey-Duresses producers:

-Domaine d'Auvenay: this small estate of 4 ha of vineyards based in Saint-Romain belongs to Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. It produces white and red wines of superior but limited quality. Its portfolio includes 5 Grands Crus, including Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bonnes Mares and Mazis-Chambertin. It also owns vineyards producing Premiers Crus in small quantities and parcels. The tiny quantities produced make it difficult to find a bottle on the market. This is why the price of a Grand Cru soars. The Grand Crus from this estate are considered rare, elegant and unrivalled. They have concentrated aromas of lilies, succulent red fruit, spices and mineral notes. On the palate, the attack is refined, supple and fleshy, with good length. The tannins soften with age and become velvety. The wines from this estate have good ageing potential. Don't hesitate to make your choice from among the wines from this estate offered on our site.
-Pierre Boisson: this family estate covers 8.5 hectares. Its vineyards are located in Mersault, with small holdings in Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Pommard and Beaune. They develop complex flavours and aromas with age. A must-taste for novice wine-lovers!
