Auxey Duresses
Auxey Duresses
This village appellation was created in 1937. It takes its name from a village in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy: the charming little village ofAuxey-Duresses, which has around 350 inhabitants and 25 winegrowers. Its vineyards are located between Monthélie and Saint-Romain, in central-eastern France. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two main grape varieties grown here. In this guide, we'll take a look at the Auxey Duresses terroir and the best producers

Terroir of Auxey Duresses
According to historical sources, this wine-growing region to the south-west of Beaune is one of Burgundy's Celtic and Gallo-Roman vineyards. It was once an annex of the Abbey of Cluny, producing both grapes and cereals. The Auxey Duresses appellation produces 700,000 litres of wine each year from an area of 1.15 km2, 70% of which is pinot noir. In the past, a large part of the production was bottled by the winegrowers themselves under the Côte de Beaune-Village appellation. But consumer interest in value-for-money Burgundies has prompted many winegrowers to bottle their wines under the Auxey-Duresses appellation
The Auxey-Duresses appellation currently boasts 9 Premiers Crus from its 93 hectares of Pinot Noir vines. Its slopes face south and south-east. The Premier Crus are all planted on the southern slopes of the Bourdon mountain. The terroir is characterised by stony marl-limestone soils that give the vineyard minerality and vigour. The climate is continental, with very cold winters and hot summers. These are fairly favourable climatic conditions for viticulture
Our selection of the best Auxey-Duresses producers:
-Domaine d'Auvenay: this small estate of 4 ha of vineyards based in Saint-Romain belongs to Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. It produces white and red wines of superior but limited quality. Its portfolio includes 5 Grands Crus, including Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bonnes Mares and Mazis-Chambertin. It also owns vineyards producing Premiers Crus in small quantities and parcels. The tiny quantities produced make it difficult to find a bottle on the market. This is why the price of a Grand Cru soars. The Grand Crus from this estate are considered rare, elegant and unrivalled. They have concentrated aromas of lilies, succulent red fruit, spices and mineral notes. On the palate, the attack is refined, supple and fleshy, with good length. The tannins soften with age and become velvety. The wines from this estate have good ageing potential. Don't hesitate to make your choice from among the wines from this estate offered on our site.
-Pierre Boisson: this family estate covers 8.5 hectares. Its vineyards are located in Mersault, with small holdings in Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Pommard and Beaune. Its red wines are a beautiful ruby colour, with a round palate, aromas of ripe, fresh red fruit, and notes of spice, leather and undergrowth right from their youth. They develop complex flavours and aromas with age. A must-taste for novice wine-lovers!
-Coche Dury: this 10.5 hectare family estate in Mersault is one of the best white wine producers in the world. The wines from this estate are characterised by finesse, freshness and supple textures. They have a complex nose, a bouquet of nuances of ripe fruit, grapes, gunpowder and oak. They are never too ripe, thanks to the quality of the terroir and the fine structure of the acidity. Marvellous wines to discover!
-Henri Boillot: in a very short space of time, this estate has forged a reputation for the quality of its wines. Its vineyards cover 15 hectares in some of Burgundy's finest terroirs in Puligny-Montrachet, Mersault, Beaune, Volnay, Pommard, Clos Vougeot and Grand-cru Bâtard-Montrachet. Its wines are sold in small quantities. They feature aromas of pear, citrus fruit, orange blossom, flowers, spices and butter. The texture is pure, rich, luxurious and superbly elegant. The wines never lose their freshness until the lingering finish.
-Jean-Marc Roulot : the 15 hectares of this family estate in Mersault produce immaculate white wines that are both opulent and dense. The domaine produces white wine appellations such as Bourgogne aligoté, Monthélie 1er cru "Champs Fuillot", Meursault "Vireuils", Meursault 1er cru "Charmes Dessous", Meursault 1er cru "Clos des Bouchères", Auxey-Duresses premier cru and others. Its white wines are magnificently aromatic, fresh, juicy and concentrated, with notes of pear, lemon and a spicy character. The finish is long, mineral and pure.
-Leflaive: this prestigious family estate was created by Joseph Leflaive between 1910 and 1930. Today, its vineyards cover 24 hectares, including 4.8 hectares of Grand Cru and 10.8 hectares of Premier Cru. The estate produces a creamy white wine with aromas of citrus fruit, flowers, fruit and hints of toast. On the palate, it is full-bodied and vibrant, with a silky, elegant texture and fine acidity. The finish is mineral and fresh. Se Grands crus and premiers crus are all exceptional wines that express the terroir and have their own personality. We offer bargains for connoisseurs and rare old vintages from this producer on the site. Make your selection from these bottles of wine and magnums available at great prices!
