Domaine Jean Jacques Confuron: history, vineyards and quality wines

Despite its small surface area of 8 ha, this Burgundy estate produces prestigious appellations sought after by wine lovers, such as Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Chambolle Musigny, as well as excellent wines designed for laying down. In all, the estate produces around fifteen cuvées, almost exclusively red wines. They are appreciated for their elegance, fine tannins and silky character. A look back at the history of the Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron and an overview of its best wines

History of the Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron .

Jean Confuron/ was the driving force behind the creation of this estate in the 1930s. At that time, he began bottling wines on the estate. His son Jean-Jacques Confuron continued the work with his brother Christian, who has worked alongside him since 1965, and created the eponymous name in 1980. But things changed when Jean-Jacques Confuron fell ill and died in 1982. His wife Andrée and daughter Sophie took over the running of the estate. Sophie was an au pair in Ireland. On her return to Burgundy, torn between the idea of selling the site or continuing to run it, she decided to take the plunge. It wasn't an easy choice at first, as she had no training whatsoever, especially as the advice on maintaining vine plants and making wine was very different. So she decided to enrol at the Lycée viticole de Beaune to receive the training she needed to become a farm operator. During this training, she met Alain Meunier, who helped her with the 1985 grape harvest. He became her husband. Together, the young couple brought the estate back to life. The vines were superbly situated in the best locations on the Côte-de-Nuits, but the cellars were worn down by time. Most of the stock was sold to local wine merchants. The couple made improvements by building new cellars equipped with the latest technology in 1989. These were fitted with pneumatic presses and temperature control. Vine yields were reduced and from 1991, the estate adopted organic production methods and no longer sold its wine in bulk.

The 8 ha planted area is spread over the Côte des Nuits, Corgolain and Chambolle Musigny. The Côte des Nuits soils are composed of limestone and red silt. Those of Corgolain and Chambolle-Musigny are also very stony. The grape varieties are 95% pinot noir and aligoté. The estate has a large proportion of old vines, especially the Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru vineyard, planted in 1929. The Nuits-Saint-Georges Premiers Crus are 45 years old, while Chambolle and Vosne Romanée Premiers Crus are 50 years old. The average age of the vines is between 20 and 35 years. The cellars are located in the small village of Prémeaux, 2 km from Nuits-Saint-Georges. The estate's winemaking style produces round, succulent fruit with silky, velvety tannins. The red grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and destemmed but not crushed. They undergo pre-fermentation maceration for 4 to 6 days to gently extract the good tannins and deep colour. 3 cap punchings a day and strict temperature control during fermentation maximise the intensity of flavours and aromas. The young wines are matured in barrels for 15 to 18 months in new wood. Separation of the clear wine from its lees and deposits is kept to a minimum, without filtration.
