Soil of Puligny-Montrachet appellation

The history of winegrowing in Burgundy goes back several centuries, if historical sources are anything to go by. However, several zones and vineyard boundaries were not well defined until the 1920s and 40s. For example, the law on the geographical boundaries of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation dates back to 1937. This small village of 385 inhabitants has 210 hectares of vineyards, including 119 hectares in the village appellation and 91 hectares planted with Premiers Crus spread over 17 climats. The village also produces 4 Grand Crus covering 28 ha, including Montrachet Grand Crus, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Crus, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Crus and Bienvenues-Montrachet-Grand Crus.
Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for its seductive white wines. The terroir, situated at an altitude of 225 m, benefits from east-facing plots. It is mainly composed of limestone and clay, providing the best growing conditions for the grapes. Chardonnay is the main grape variety used. It produces wines with a brilliant golden colour and greenish tints, with complex aromas of hazelnut, green apple, confectionery paste and mineral notes. When mature, they become rich, buttery and highly concentrated, with great depth. Chardonnay lovers are snapping up the best vintages from this appellation
