Meursault


Mersault, dubbed "the capital of Burgundy white wines", is located between Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. This local Côte de Beaune appellation was established in 1937. It covers 19 climats classified as Premiers crus and villages. These are clear, brilliant, unctuous white wines with intense aromas and a good balance between fatness and acidity. Terroir of Mersault appellation


The Mersault vineyard covers around 400 hectares, 95% of which is given over to Chardonnay. Red wine production is limited to just a few plots. According to history, the Cîteaux monks were the first wine-growers in the 11th century in this commune dotted with prestigious châteaux. The Mersault appellation takes its name from the historic estate, the impressive Château Mersault. The eponymous château is world-famous for La Paulée, its legendary lunches celebrating the end of the harvest each year. It is also the largest owner in the appellation. The château produces Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and other appellations, as well as a monopole: Clos de Grands Charons.
The best terroirs in the appellation are composed of Jurassic marl and marly limestone. This is the ideal terroir for Chardonnays, the main grape variety in this appellation, as it allows them to express all the finesse and potential of their aromas. These terroirs lie at an altitude of 260 m between east and south. The white wines in this appellation can be kept for 8 to 15 years, compared with 5 to 10 years for the reds

-Domaine Coche Dury: this estate produces exceptionally intense, full-bodied wines, with concentrated but never overpowering fruit. The palpable acidity is well balanced. It is one of the most sought-after estates internationally because of its style of Mersault wines. At its best, its wines have a pleasant nutty flavour, a creamy, silky, full-bodied texture with notes of exotic fruit, lemon peel, mineral elements and a hint of truffle aroma. Its Grands Crus plots are all located in Mersault, while its vineyard sites are spread across the communes of Mersault, Puligny-Montrachet, Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses, Volnay and Corton Charlemagne. This producer also makes AOC village wines.
-Domaine d'Auvernay: this small 4-hectare vineyard belongs to the Leroy empire. It includes two Grands Crus in the Côte de Nuits and plots in the Chardonnay terroirs of the Côte de Beaune. The estate adopts biodynamic principles and low yields to produce prestigious wines with a precise, elegant and rich style. Because of the tiny quantities produced by the estate, the wines are snapped up as soon as they are released. It is rare to find old or recent vintages, as the estate prefers not to offer them for sale unless they are ready to be enjoyed. On our website, you'll be spoilt for choice for vintages dating from 1998 to 2015. The rarity of these old vintages makes them a good deal for collectors and connoisseurs, or for those wishing to build up a cellar.
-Jean Marc Roulot: this producer is a pioneer in turning his Mersault village wines into unique appellations such as Tillets, Luchets, Tesson and Meix-Chavaux. This estate, held in high esteem by the critics, was founded in 1830. It produces organically grown Premiers crus and village wines. Take a tour of our site to choose from this producer's quality wines, offered at great value for money. Its wines offer a fine expression of their terroir, with a silky, dense style, good acidity and long-lasting flavours.
-Arnaud Ente: this producer offers a tiny production from his 4 ha of vineyards, spread over 10 parcels. He produces a number of Premiers Crus of rare beauty. These are rich, generous yet precise wines with a juicy citrus flavour and good minerality. Critics say the estate produces wines that rival the best, and that improve with each new vintage.
-Bernard Bonin: this 7-hectare estate produces white wines from its vineyards in Mersault and Puligny-Montrachet. He also follows biodynamic methods. His wines have a delicate nose, with intense flavours of green apples, lemon peel, white peaches, cheese rind and hints of matches. The texture is vibrant with lively acidity and a finish marked by a hint of mineral elements.
-Maison Leroy: this négociant/winemaker in the Côte des Nuits region produces a range of wines from iconic terroirs such as Clos de Vougeot, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Le Chambertin, Musigny.... Its 23 ha of vineyards include Grands Crus and Premiers Crus plots, as well as vineyards in village and communal appellations. Its wines have a fantastic nose of fragrant red fruit, spices and hints of tar. The palate is silky and concentrated, with a lovely structure and great length.
-Pierre Morey: this 10-hectare family estate, founded over 2 centuries ago, is also one of Burgundy's most emblematic vineyards. It has been producing biodynamic wines since 1998. Its wines feature pure, airy aromas of citrus blossom and mineral notes, with a lovely mouthfeel of vibrant, tight or muscular flavours on the long, lemony finish.
-Comtes Lafon: this Burgundy wine estate produces whites and reds that are much appreciated by connoisseurs. It has also applied the principle of biodynamic viticulture since 1998. The Montrachet is considered the jewel in Lafon's crown. But the Mersault Perrières and Mersault Goutte d'or on sale on this site are also a fine introduction to this producer's renowned range. They offer good value for money. The wines from this estate have an expressive bouquet with aromas of citrus fruit, nuts, minerals and dried petals. On tasting, they have an impressive palate with a long spicy or fruity finish.
