Karuizawa
Karuizawa refers here to the former Japanese malt whisky distillery located in Miyota, in Nagano Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Asama. Built in 1955 to produce malt whisky intended primarily for the ‘Ocean’ blends, it ceased all distillation at the end of 2000. Bottlings marketed under this name therefore come from historical stocks distilled prior to this closure.

Histoire du domaine
The historic Karuizawa distillery was built in 1955 by Daikoku Budoshu, near Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture. Its first spirits were produced in 1956 using four copper pot stills. At that time, it produced malt whisky intended primarily for blends under the Ocean brand. In 1962, its owner became part of the Sanraku-Ocean group, a company which subsequently took the name Mercian in 1990. In the 1980s, Mercian also began marketing Karuizawa whisky as a single malt. Faced with a decline in the Japanese whisky market, distillation ceased on 31 December 2000 and the distillery has not resumed operations. Mercian became part of the Kirin Group in 2007. In 2011, the 364 remaining Karuizawa casks were sold to Number One Drinks, which continued to bottle some of these stocks. The site of the former distillery was sold in 2012, and the equipment was dismantled in 2016. A new distillery, Karuizawa Whisky Co., separate from the former Mercian facility, began distilling in Karuizawa in 2022.
