Auxey Duresses
Auxey Duresses
This village appellation was instituted in 1937. It takes its name from a village in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune sub-region: the charming little village ofAuxey-Duresses, with a population of around 350 and 25 winegrowers. Its vineyards are located between Monthélie and Saint-Romain, in central-eastern France. Pinot noir and Chardonnay are the two main grape varieties grown here. In this guide, we'll provide an overview of the Auxey Duresses appellation terroir and the best producers

Terroir of Auxey Duresses
According to historical sources, this wine-growing region southwest of Beaune is one of Burgundy's Celtic and Gallo-Roman vineyards. It was once an annex of the Cluny Abbey, producing both grapes and cereals. The Auxey Duresses appellation produces 700,000 liters of wine a year from 1.15 km2 of land. 70% of this is pinot noir. In the past, much of the production was bottled by the winegrowers themselves under the Côte de Beaune-Village appellation. But consumer interest in value-for-money Burgundies has prompted many winemakers to bottle their wines under the Auxey-Duresses appellation
This appellation currently boasts 9 Premiers Crus from its 93 ha of Pinot Noir vines. Its slopes face south and southeast. The Premiers Crus are all planted on the southern slopes of the Bourdon mountain. The terroir is characterized by stony marly-limestone soils that give the vineyard minerality and vigor. The climate is continental, with very cold winters and hot summers. These climatic conditions are quite favorable to viticulture
Our selection of the best producers in the Auxey-Duresses appellation:
-Domaine d'Auvenay: this small estate of 4 ha of vineyards based in Saint-Romain is owned by Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. It produces white and red wines of superior but limited quality. Its portfolio includes 5 Grands Crus, including Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bonnes Mares and Mazis-Chambertin. It also owns vineyards producing Premiers Crus in small quantities, as well as parcels. The tiny quantities produced make it difficult to find a bottle on the market. This makes the price of a Grand Cru soar. Indeed, this estate's Grand Crus are considered rare, elegant and unrivalled. They have concentrated aromas of lilies, succulent red fruits, spices and mineral notes. On the palate, the attack is refined, supple, fleshy and long. The tannins soften with age and become velvety. Wines from this estate have good ageing potential. Don't hesitate to make your choice from among the wines of this domaine offered on our site.
-Pierre Boisson: this family estate covers 8.5 hectares. Its vineyards are located in Mersault, with smaller holdings in Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Pommard and Beaune. Our red wines are ruby-colored, with a round mouthfeel, aromas of ripe, fresh red fruit, and notes of spice, leather and undergrowth in their youth. They develop complex flavors and aromas with age. A must-taste for novice wine lovers!
-Coche Dury: this 10.5-hectare family estate in Mersault is one of the world's finest producers of white wines. Finesse, freshness and supple textures are the hallmarks of this estate's wines. They have a complex nose, a bouquet of nuances of ripe fruit, grapes, gunpowder and oak. They're never too ripe, thanks to the quality of the terroir and the fine structure of the acidity. Marvels to discover!
-Henri Boillot: in a very short space of time, this estate has forged a reputation for the quality of its wines. Its vineyards cover 15 ha in some of Burgundy's finest terroirs in Puligny-Montrachet, Mersault, Beaune, Volnay, Pommard, Clos Vougeot and Grand-cru Bâtard-Montrachet. His wines are sold in small quantities. They emphasize aromas of pear, citrus, orange blossom, flowers, spices and butter. The texture is pure, rich, luxurious and superbly elegant. The wines don't lose their freshness until the lingering finish.
-Jean-Marc Roulot : the 15 ha of this family estate in Mersault produce immaculate white wines that are both opulent and dense. The domaine produces white wine appellations such as Bourgogne aligoté, Monthélie 1er cru "Champs Fuillot", Meursault "Vireuils", Meursault 1er cru "Charmes Dessous", Meursault 1er cru "Clos des Bouchères", Auxey-Duresses premier cru and more. His white wines are magnificently aromatic, fresh, juicy and concentrated, with notes of pear, lemon and spice. The finish is long, mineral and pure.
-Leflaive: this prestigious family estate was created by Joseph Leflaive between 1910 and 1930. Today, its vineyards cover 24 ha, including 4.8 ha of Grand Cru and 10.8 ha of Premier Cru. The estate produces a creamy white wine, with aromas of citrus, flowers, fruit and hints of toast. Full-bodied and vibrant on the palate, with a silky, elegant texture and good acidity. The finish is mineral and fresh. Se Grands crus and premiers crus are all exceptional wines expressing the terroir and having their own personality. We offer bargains for connoisseurs and rare old vintages from this producer on the site. Make your selection from these bottles of wine and magnums available at great prices!
