Château Ausone
The Ausone estate takes its name from a poet of the Late Roman Empire. Born in Bordeaux, Ausone was a great lover of wine. What could be more logical for this Saint-Emilion Grand Cru than to pay tribute to him? Ausone's wine is extremely old, dating back to the 13th century. It remains a modest estate, with 7 hectares devoted exclusively to red wine and producing 18,000 bottles a year. But its consecration as a Grand Cru proves just what this east/south-east-facing limestone hillside is capable of.
Moreover, as a Grand Cru, Château Ausone is representative of Saint-Emilion: it is an aromatic, straightforward wine. On the other hand, it requires ten to fifteen years of cellaring. All its most recent vintages have been remarkable. Among the most sought-after vintages is 2005, which can rightly be described as legendary. Today, Ausone is tending more and more to emphasise the flavour of the fruit, reducing in particular the use of new barrels (although this remains the vast majority).
