Terroir of Puligny-Montrachet appellation
The history of viticulture in Burgundy goes back several centuries, if historical sources are anything to go by. However, many vineyard zones and boundaries were not well defined until the 20s and 40s. For example, the law on the geographical boundaries of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation dates back to 1937. This small village of 385 inhabitants has 210 ha of vineyards, including 119 ha in the village appellation and 91 ha planted with Premiers Crus spread over 17 climats. The commune also produces 4 Grand Crus on 28 ha, including Montrachet Grand Crus, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Crus, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Crus and Bienvenues-Montrachet-Grand Crus.
Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for its seductive white wines. The terroir, situated at an altitude of 225 m, benefits from east-facing plots. The soil is composed mainly of limestone and clay, providing optimal growing conditions for the grapes. Chardonnay is the main grape variety used. It produces brilliant golden wines with greenish highlights and complex aromas of hazelnut, green apple, confectionery paste and mineral notes. At maturity, they become rich, buttery and highly concentrated, with great depth. Chardonnay lovers are snapping up the best vintages of this appellation
