Terroir of Puligny-Montrachet appellation


The history of viticulture in Burgundy goes back several centuries, if historical sources are anything to go by. However, many vineyard zones and boundaries were not well defined until the 20s and 40s. For example, the law on the geographical boundaries of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation dates back to 1937. This small village of 385 inhabitants has 210 ha of vineyards, including 119 ha in the village appellation and 91 ha planted with Premiers Crus spread over 17 climats. The commune also produces 4 Grand Crus on 28 ha, including Montrachet Grand Crus, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Crus, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Crus and Bienvenues-Montrachet-Grand Crus.
Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for its seductive white wines. The terroir, situated at an altitude of 225 m, benefits from east-facing plots. The soil is composed mainly of limestone and clay, providing optimal growing conditions for the grapes. Chardonnay is the main grape variety used. It produces brilliant golden wines with greenish highlights and complex aromas of hazelnut, green apple, confectionery paste and mineral notes. Puligny Montrachet is capable of producing outstanding wines: concentrated, with complex aromas and great balance. This style of wine is ideal with delicate dishes such as poultry in sauce. Some gourmets will also serve it with foie gras or lobster dishes. It's also at home with soft cheeses and goat's milk cheeses
-Ramonet: this 17-hectare estate produces highly sought-after wines ranging from village to Grand and Premier Crus. It has Grands Crus sites in Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet. On this site, you'll find old vintages available in bottles and magnums, as well as new editions of some of the finest vintages. These wines are all available at attractive prices. -Domaine D'Auvenay: connoisseurs and collectors of fine wines praise this Lalou-Bize Leroy estate for its exceptional wines. It produces Grands crus in Chevalier-Montrachet, Criôts-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bonne Mares, among others. Like many of the wines in the range, his Grands Crus are considered rare and elegant, with concentrated aromas of red fruits, blackberries and lilies. On tasting, these full-bodied wines combine a mineral mouthfeel with spicy, leathery notes.
-Romanée Conti: this 25-hectare vineyard co-owned by the Leroy/Roch and Villaine families produces sumptuous, flamboyant red Grands Crus at premium prices. The wines for sale on this site fully express the potential of their terroir. They have a magnificent dark ruby color that turns crimson with age. They have a bouquet of juicy red and black berries, violets, spices and hints of undergrowth. Powerful, sensual and full on the palate, they give way to exceptional longevity, velvety tannins and subtle woody nuances.
-Henri Boillot: this producer has also built his reputation on the quality of his wines. His portfolio includes Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and reds and whites from the Côte de Beaune appellations. Its white wines are gold in color, with notes of apple, straw, oak, vanilla and mineral. The palate is full-bodied, with good acidity, well-integrated oak flavors and a long finish. This producer's wines for sale on this platform offer excellent value for money.
-Leflaive: this most famous of the appellation's producers covers 22 ha planted with Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. The red wine style of this family-run domaine is one of taut, ripe-fruit aromas, herbaceous complexity and mineral notes. On the palate, they give a sensation of rich, dense fruit, soft texture, fatness, sweetness and minerality.
-Drouhin: Drouhin is another big name in Burgundy wine production. Active in this sector for over 140 years, it creates nearly 90 appellations ranging from Grands Crus to affordable village wines. Its wines are elegant, well-balanced and long-lived.
-Bouchard Père et fils: this great house also makes its mark on the history of Burgundy winegrowing. It produces over a hundred appellations, the majority of which are Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. The wines of this leading Côte d'Or vineyard owner are divided into 30 Grands Crus, 183 Premiers Crus and 92 prestigious wines. These wines are prized for their high quality, concentration and balance, as well as their good value for money. These consistent wines improve wonderfully with age. -Pierre Morey: this 10-hectare biodynamically farmed estate has parcels in Meursault, Monthélie, Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet. Its white wines feature pure, elegant, fresh aromas of citrus blossom and wet stone. Generous, medium-bodied flavors display notes of minerality, depth and length on the palate.
-Coche Dury: hailed as one of the world's greatest winemakers by Robert Parker, this producer produces magnificent wines, with beautiful aromas even though they come from small appellations. These wines are an interesting choice for restaurant owners. He produces wines with great intensity and power, designed to be enjoyed in their youth but also suitable for years of cellaring.
-Arnaud Ente: this rising star of Burgundy cultivates 4 ha of vineyards in Mersault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay and more. His wines range from rich, intense and full-bodied to precise, fine and mineral with citrus notes. We offer several promotional wines from today's fashionable domaine.
-Blain Gagnard: this 8-hectare vineyard cultivates parcels of Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, including Montrachet, Bâtard and Criots. The domaine advocates minimal intervention in winemaking. This results in wines with great purity of fruit, balanced acidity and flavors that perfectly express each grape variety and the best of their terroir. -Jacques Prieur: after years of declining wine quality, the owner of this estate has invested in improving his wines through the purchase of new equipment, the implementation of biodynamic practices and so on. Today, his 21-hectare estate produces Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. His white wines have a generous nose of lemon and buttery roundness, with a fine Puligny-Montrachet minerality and spicy notes. -Bachelet Ramonet: this 13-hectare estate produces red and white wines divided into around 20 Premier Cru and 3 Grands Crus. The estate is ideally situated at the foot of the Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet hills. Its wines are elegant, concentrated and well-balanced.
