Château Mouton Rothschild 1975 Bottle (75cl) HD

The 1975 Château Mouton Rothschild is a red wine from Pauillac, Bordeaux, produced by Château Mouton Rothschild, a property owned by the Rothschild family and classified as a First Growth (1er Grand Cru Classé) in 1855. Its blend comprises 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. It is rated 90/100 by The Wine Advocate, 16.5/20 by Jancis Robinson, and 95/100 by James Suckling. Critics note an ample, tannic wine with dark fruit characters and a finish that can gain in suppleness and velvety texture. Jancis Robinson suggested a drinking window from 1995 to 2012.

Histoire du domaine

In the 18th century, the estate belonged successively to the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur and then to the Barons of Brane. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction, and it was subsequently renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. His great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, took over the management of the estate in 1922. In 1924, he decided to bottle the entire production at the château, whereas previously the wine had been delivered in barrels to wine merchants. He had the Grand Chai built in 1926 and founded the Baron Philippe de Rothschild company in 1933. From 1945 onwards, the labels for the grand cru were illustrated each year with an original work commissioned from an artist. In 1962, the Museum of Wine in Art was inaugurated at the château. In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé, having been classified as a second growth in 1855. On the death of Baron Philippe in 1988, his only daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, succeeded him; she launched Aile d’Argent in 1991 and Le Petit Mouton in 1993, before commissioning a new fermentation vat in 2012. Since 2014, the château has been owned by her three children; Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy has been in charge of the technical management of the family’s Bordeaux estates since 2020.

This wine has finally begun to reveal some potential. It has been closed and frightfully tannic for the last decade. The wine exhibits a good dark ruby/garnet color, a sweet nose of cedar, chocolate, cassis, and spices, good ripe fruit and extraction, and a weighty, large-scaled, tannic finish. Although still unevolved, it is beginning to throw off its cloak of tannin and exhibit more complexity and balance. I remain concerned about how well the fruit will hold, but this wine will undoubtedly hit its plateau around the turn of the century. Putting it in the context of what is a largely disappointing range of Mouton-Rothchilds in the decade of the seventies, great bottles of the 1970 are superior to the 1975, but this is clearly the second-best Mouton of the decade. Last tasted 12/95

I absolutely love the nose of licorice, minerals, black currants, and berries. Full and slightly hard and acidic, but I could smell it all night. It softens and turns velvety and dusty on the finish with lots of fruit. Why wait on this? Served from imperial bottle.

Served from an imperial at a Claret Club dinner at The Ledbury in London where economist Jim O'Neill spoke. It was actually rather dry and tasted as though it would never throw off the tannic dryness that has always marked so many 1975s.
