Histoire du domaine

Jacques Selosse moved to Avize in 1947, although he did not come from a family of winegrowers. He founded the estate with his wife in 1949, starting with just a few plots of vines. During his early years, he mainly sold his grapes to wine merchants. Experiments in winemaking with a view to producing his own champagne began in 1959. The estate’s first winemaking took place in 1964, yielding 2,500 bottles. Anselme Selosse joined the estate in 1974 after training in Beaune, and took over its management in 1980. Under his leadership, the estate developed a viticultural approach based first on organic farming from 1990, then biodynamics from 1996, and finally an approach inspired by permaculture from 2002. He also introduced the practice of vinifying and maturing wine from individual plots in barrels. Guillaume Selosse joined his father at the estate in 2012 and has been in charge since 2018. The vineyard now covers 8.3 hectares, spread across 54 plots, mainly classified as grands crus.

Cuvée

V.O.

V.O. is a Blanc de Blancs champagne made from Chardonnay originating from the upper slopes of Avize, Cramant, and Oger. The cuvée blends several years and differs from Initial by the higher origin of its grapes and by zero or very low dosage. It seeks a particularly chalky, taut, and dry expression of the Côte des Blancs.

Origin of the cuvée name
V.O. stands for "Version Originale" (Original Version). The name refers to the chalk of the upper slopes, considered by Anselme Selosse to be the original bedrock from which the soils lower down are derived.
Style of the cuvée
Dry, taut, and vinous style, marked by a strong chalky and saline expression, with greater austerity and verticality than Initial.
Position within the range
Along with Initial, one of the fundamental blending cuvées in the range, focused on the upper slopes and tension.

Histoire de la cuvée

Version Originale is historically presented as one of the two blending cuvées forming the foundation of the Jacques Selosse range, alongside Initial. It reflects Anselme Selosse's choice to bring together multiple harvests to prioritize the expression of the upper slopes rather than that of an isolated vintage.
