Château Troplong Mondot 1995 Bouteille (75cl) ETLA

Château Troplong Mondot 1995 is a Saint-Émilion red wine, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, produced by Château Troplong Mondot. Its blend combines 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The cuvée comes from an estate characterized by the complementarity of clay and limestone, fundamental elements of its identity. The Wine Advocate awards it 92/100 and places its drinking window between 2003 and 2020; Wine Spectator rates it 90/100 and recommended waiting until after 2008. Critics describe a dense and still firm Saint-Émilion, where black fruits, cherry, mineral notes, cedar, and oak aging extend into a sustained tannic structure.

Totally shut down and enclosed, with an impressively saturated purple/black color and a promising but tightly strung nose of mineral, vanilla, espresso, black cherry and currant, this wine has beautiful purity, medium to full body, relatively high but sweet tannin, and a long 30-35 second finish. The wine is very firm but impressive as well as promising. Patience please! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. Last tasted, 11/02.

Wine Spectator 90/100

Aromas of violet, berries and cedar follow through to a full-bodied palate, with firm tannins and a medium finish. The fruit is still tied up in knots. Give it time.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2008. Published on March 31, 2007

70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines are planted on a clay-limestone plateau at a density of 5,600 vines/ha for old vines, 6,600 vines/ha for young vines. Average vine age is 50 years. Vines were debudded in spring and deleafed and thinned out in July, in order to achieve optimal ripeness of grapes. Manual harvest took place 20 – 25 Sept for Merlot, 2 – 3 Oct for the Cabernets. Traditional vinification in small stainless steel, temperature controlled vats lasting 21 – 28 days with regular pumpovers. 83% of final blend was aged in new oak barrels for 15 months. Winemaker Michel Rolland. Earthy and rich, but with a certain degree of restraint too. Classic and complex, with a lovely stage of maturity on display, although the tannins are still quite keen. Doesn’t score well for quality:price ratio, mind.
