Histoire du domaine

The documented history of Ducru-Beaucaillou dates back to 1720, when Jacques de Bergeron married Marie Dejean, heiress to the vineyard. The Bergeron family retained ownership of the estate until 1797, when it was acquired by the Béarn wine merchant Bertrand Ducru. He invested in the vineyard and cellars, and his name was subsequently associated with that of Beaucaillou. In 1855, the château was classified as a Second Growth in the Imperial Classification of Médoc wines. The estate was sold in 1866 to Lucie-Caroline Dassier, wife of the wine merchant Nathaniel Johnston. Under the impetus of Nathaniel Johnston, the estate underwent architectural transformations and, together with the estate manager Ernest David and the scientist Alexis Millardet, played a part in the research that led to the development of Bordeaux mixture in 1884. The Johnstons sold the château in 1928 to Fernand Odon Desbarats and Mary Butler de Burke. In 1942, Francis Borie took Ducru-Beaucaillou on a life lease, before his son Jean-Eugène Borie began restoring the vineyard and cellars in 1959. Bruno-Eugène Borie, son of Jean-Eugène and the resident owner, now heads Ducru-Beaucaillou SA. Technical management is in the hands of Emmanuel Bonneau and Cécile Dupuis.

Deep garnet in color, the 2006 Ducru-Beaucaillou delivers expressive Black Forest cake, blackcurrant cordial and chocolate box scents with touches of fertile loam, espresso, Marmite toast and black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with vibrant fruit expression and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with a lively lift.

Subtle aromas of currants, blueberries and minerals. Full body with super-integrated tannins and a fine, fine finish. I love the texture to this wine, and it’s just starting to show you the true quality it has. Start drinking. One of the top wines of this vintage. Better in 2016.

‘After a cold, wet winter, the growing season got off to a good start, with ideal summer conditions in June and July. Specifically, from April to July rainfall was much lower than average and both June and July were hot, dry, and sunny (4 °C/7.2 °F above average). August brought cooler temperatures and periods of rain, keeping our teams working hard to ensure the vines were well-aerated, to ward off disease pressure. September was sunny and warm with overall nice weather through to harvest.’ Harvest: 2 October – 16 October. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. 18 months in new French oak. Saturated deep garnet. Smells richer and darker than the 2004. Notes of undergrowth and liquorice. Really grippy tannins and more power and concentration than in the 2004, well balanced between fruit and structure. Still chewy and finishes rather abruptly.
