Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron
Domaine Jean Jacques Confuron: history, vineyards and quality wines
Despite its small 8-hectare surface area, this Burgundy domaine produces prestigious appellations such as Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Chambolle Musigny, as well as excellent wines for ageing. In all, the domaine produces some 15 cuvées, almost exclusively red wines. They are appreciated for their elegance, fine tannins and silky character. History of Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron .
The Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron/ was founded in the 1930s on the initiative of Jean Confuron/. At that time, he began bottling wines on the estate. His son Jean-Jacques Confuron continued the work with his brother Christian, who has worked alongside him since 1965, and created the eponymous name in 1980. But things changed when Jean-Jacques Confuron fell ill and died in 1982. His wife Andrée and daughter Sophie took over the running of the estate. Sophie had been an au pair in Ireland. Back in Burgundy, torn between the idea of reselling the site or continuing the business, she decided to take the plunge. It wasn't an easy choice at first, as she had no formal training, and advice on vine maintenance and wine-making was very different. Instead, she enrolled at the Lycée viticole de Beaune, where she received training to become a farm operator. During this training, she met Alain Meunier, who helped her with the 1985 grape harvest. He became her husband. Together, the young couple brought the estate back to life. The vines are superbly situated in the best sites of the Côte-de-Nuits, but the cellars are worn by time. Most of the stock was sold to local wine merchants. The couple made improvements, building new cellars equipped with the latest technology in 1989. These were fitted with pneumatic presses and temperature control. Vineyard yields were reduced, and in 1991 the estate adopted organic production methods, no longer selling bulk wine.
Vinification at Domaine Jean Jacques Confuron.
The 8 ha planted area is spread over the Côte des Nuits, Corgolain and Chambolle Musigny regions. The Côte des Nuits soils are composed of limestone and red silt. Those of Corgolain and Chambolle-Musigny are also very stony. The grape varieties are 95% Pinot Noir and Aligoté. The estate boasts a significant proportion of old vines, especially the Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru vineyard, planted in 1929. The Nuits-Saint-Georges Premiers Crus are 45 years old, while Chambolle and Vosne Romanée Premiers Crus are 50 years old. The average age of the vines is between 20 and 35 years. The cellars are located in the small village of Prémeaux, 2 km from Nuits-Saint-Georges. The domaine's winemaking style produces round, succulent fruit with silky, velvety tannins. The red grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, destemmed but not crushed. They undergo 4- to 6-day pre-fermentation maceration to gently extract the right tannins and deep color. 3 cap punchings a day and strict temperature control during fermentation maximize the intensity of flavors and aromas. The young wines are matured in barrels for 15 to 18 months in new wood. Separation of the clear wine from its lees and deposits is kept to a minimum, without filtration.
