Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2000 Jéroboam (300cl)

The Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2000 is a red wine from the Rhône Valley produced by Château de Beaucastel, owned by Jean-Pierre and François Perrin. It is a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, and 15% other permitted grape varieties. Following a very hot summer, the harvest enjoyed favorable conditions until its completion. The grapes are harvested by hand and separately; Mourvèdre and Syrah are vinified in truncated wooden vats, and Grenache in concrete vats, followed by one year of aging in oak foudres. The Wine Advocate awards it 94/100 (drinking window 2007-2025), Jancis Robinson 17,5/20 (2005-2020), and Wine Spectator 90/100 (through 2020). Critics describe a broad, evolved profile combining dark fruits, dried cherry, spices, gamey notes, truffle, chocolate, and softened tannins.

The opaque ruby/purple-colored 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a profoundly sweet perfume of melted licorice, blackberries, and black cherries backed up by loads of glycerin, full body, and moderately high but sweet, well-integrated tannin. There is a seamlessness to the 2000 that will make it accessible early in life, and thus atypical for Beaucastel. The 1985 behaved in this manner when young, but the 2000 possesses even more stuffing. Like its 2001 sibling, it is a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance other permitted varietals. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. Clean and fresh, bursting with fruit and spices. Full-bodied, it delivers some game, truffle, vanilla notes. It's distinctive and ought to reveal wonderful terroir with age, but for now it hasn't come together. Needs time. Drink now through 2020. 16,665 cases made, 4,165 cases imported. Dried fruit, musty, dank aromas – not in a tainted way, but certainly shows its age. The fruit stays intact on the palate with dried cherry and bramble jam, plus chocolate, seared beef and pepper spice. I’d be tempted to enjoy this soon.
