Mersault, dubbed "the capital of Burgundy white wines", is located between Volnay and Puligny-Montrachet. This Côte de Beaune communal appellation status was instituted in 1937. Terroir of Mersault appellation
The Mersault vineyard covers around 400 hectares, 95% of which is devoted to Chardonnay. Red wine production is limited to just a few parcels. According to history, the Cîteaux monks were the first winegrowers in the 11th century in this commune dotted with prestigious châteaux. The Mersault appellation takes its name from the impressive historic Château Mersault estate. The eponymous château is world-renowned for La Paulée, its legendary lunches celebrating the end of the harvest each year. It is also the largest owner in the appellation. The château produces Grands crus, Premiers crus and other appellations, as well as a monopole: Clos de Grands Charons.
The appellation's best terroirs are composed of Jurassic marl and marly limestone. The ideal terroir for Chardonnays, the main grape variety in this appellation, as it enables them to express all the finesse and potential of their aromas. These terroirs lie at an altitude of 260 m between east and south. The white wines in this appellation can be kept for 8 to 15 years, compared with 5 to 10 years for the reds

-Domaine Coche Dury: this estate produces exceptionally intense, full-bodied wines, with concentrated but never overpowering fruit. The palpable acidity is well balanced. It is one of the most sought-after estates internationally for its style of Mersault wines. At their best, his wines have a pleasant nutty flavor, a creamy, silky, full-bodied texture with notes of exotic fruit, lemon peel, mineral elements and a hint of truffle aroma. Its Grands Crus parcels are all located in Mersault, while its vineyard sites are spread across the communes of Mersault, Puligny-Montrachet, Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses, Volnay and Corton Charlemagne. This producer also produces AOC village wines.
-Domaine d'Auvernay: this small 4-hectare vineyard belongs to the Leroy empire. It includes two Grands Crus in Côte de Nuits and parcels of Chardonnay terroirs in Côte de Beaune. The domaine adopts biodynamic principles and low yields to produce prestigious wines with a precise, elegant, rich style. Because of the tiny quantities produced by the Maison, the wines are snapped up as soon as they are released. It is rare to find old or recent vintages, as the estate prefers not to offer them for sale unless they are ready to be enjoyed. On our site, you're spoilt for choice with vintages dating from 1998 to 2015. The rarity of these older vintages makes them a good deal for collectors and enthusiasts, or for those wishing to build up a cellar.
-Jean Marc Roulot: this producer is a pioneer in turning his Mersault village wines into unique appellations such as Tillets, Luchets, Tesson and Meix-Chavaux. This critically acclaimed estate was founded in 1830. It produces organically grown Premiers crus and village wines. -Arnaud Ente: this producer offers a tiny production on his 4 ha of vineyards, spread over 10 parcels. He produces a few Premiers Crus of rare beauty. These are rich, generous yet precise wines coupled with juicy citrus and good minerality. Critics say the domaine produces wines that rival the best, improving with each new vintage.
-Bernard Bonin: this 7-hectare estate produces white wines from its vineyards in Mersault and Puligny-Montrachet. He also follows biodynamic methods. His wines have a delicate nose, with intense flavors of green apples, lemon peel, white peaches, cheese rind and hints of matches. The texture is vibrant, with lively acidity and a finish marked by a hint of mineral elements.
-Maison Leroy: this négociant/winemaker in the Côte des Nuits region produces a range of wines from iconic terroirs such as Clos de Vougeot, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Le Chambertin, Musigny.... Its 23 ha of vineyards include Grands Crus and Premiers Crus parcels, as well as vineyards in village and communal appellations. His wines have a fantastic nose of fragrant red fruits, spices and hints of tar. The palate is silky, concentrated with a lovely structure and great length.
-Pierre Morey: this 10-hectare family estate, founded over 2 centuries ago, is also one of Burgundy's most emblematic vineyard estates. Its production has been biodynamic since 1998. Its wines feature pure, airy aromas of citrus blossom and mineral notes, with a beautiful mouthfeel of vibrant, tight or muscular flavors on the long, lemony finish.
-Comtes Lafon: this Burgundy wine estate produces white and red wines much appreciated by wine lovers. It has also applied the biodynamic principle since 1998. Montrachet is considered the jewel in Lafon's crown. But the Mersault Perrières and Mersault Goutte d'or on sale on this site are also a fine introduction to this producer's renowned range. They are offered at an attractive price/quality ratio. The wines from this estate have an expressive bouquet with aromas of citrus, nuts, minerals and dried petals. On tasting, they have an impressive palate with a long spicy or fruity finish.
