Clos des Papes
Clos des Papes: exceptional wines
In the heart of the Rhone Valley, the history of the Clos des Papes estate goes back a long way: as early as the 17th century, the presence of vines on this territory is attested. In fact, Clos des Papes was originally part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The name Clos des Papes did not appear until the end of the 19th century, with the first mourdèvre-based cuvée marketed in 1896. Since then, Clos des Papes has become one of the most popular elements of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, alongside other great names such as Rayas and Beaucastel. Its trump card: a 32-hectare parcel of land, where rolled pebbles rub shoulders with clay and sand. Some of the vines here are over 80 years old
The wines of Clos des Papes are exceptional. The Avril family's choice to bring together the entire production yields results that are both powerful and very pure. This is the secret of the domaine: the balance of forces. As a result, these wines have an extraordinary longevity. Of the 80,000 bottles produced each year, 95% are reds, with an unprecedented diversity of grape varieties. The same applies to the remaining 5% for white wines: roussanne, clairette, grenache...
