Gevrey Chambertin
Appellation Gevrey-Chambertin
Gevrey Chambertin is a commune and corresponding appellation in the Côte des Nuits region. This appellation was created in 1936. It covers the production of red wines made from Pinot noir, the main grape variety used in this sub-region of Burgundy. These are full-bodied, well-balanced wines with massive, velvety tannins that express the magic of their terroir. Here's an overview of the quality of the geographical area covered by the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, and the top producers in this wine classification

Terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin appellation
The wine-growing commune of Gevrey is a fairly large town with over 3,000 inhabitants. It is located 15 km from Dijon, in the Côte d'Or region. The wines produced here include 9 Grands Crus and 26 Premier Cru and Village appellations. Vineyards cover 405 ha. The majority of Premiers Crus are planted on sloping soils composed of Jura marl mixed with red alluvium. The 9 Grands Crus, on the other hand, are grown on shallow soils of hard Bajocian limestone. Wine quality declines as you approach the alluvial plain to the east, along the RN74
Our selection of the best Gevrey Chambertin producers:
-Armand Rousseau: this 15-hectare estate was founded in the early 20th century by its namesake Armand Rousseau. The vineyards are divided into 8.5 ha of Grands Crus and 3.8 ha of Premier Crus. The limestone and clay-limestone soils are ideal for vine growth. The estate also adopts a policy of low yields and meticulous control over vinification. The result is wines that are concentrated, powerful, elegant, racy and full-bodied, with good ageing potential.
-Dugat-Py: Loïc Dugat is the 13th generation of winemakers on this 5-hectare estate, which includes Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites. Most of the vines on this organic estate are very old, around 65 years. The key to this estate's success in producing extremely elegant, well-balanced wines lies in low-intervention vinification and the age of the vines. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering. An estate to keep an eye on, as it has grown in stature over the last 10 years.
-Domaine Trapet: the manager of this wine estate is now in the 7th generation of the Trapet family. The 18-hectare estate boasts Premiers Crus and Grands Crus sites in Chapelle-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin and the mighty Chambertin. The domaine's wines are the epitome of elegance and purity. They are wonderfully perfumed, with notes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant, spices, cedar and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied, with a fairly firm structure and ripe tannins. Chambertin Grand Cru is the most sought-after of this producer's crus.
-Faiveley: this 115-hectare estate based in Nuits St-Georges is one of Burgundy's largest. The history of this estate, which boasts some of the most famous crus appellations, goes back almost two centuries. It produces 54 different wines, the best-known of which are Bourgogne Grand cru and Premier cru. This cru, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, stands out for its earthy notes, complex nose, firm tannins and opulent mouthfeel of fruit, spice, oak and vanilla. A must-taste!
-Prieuré Roch: this winery was founded in 1988 by Henri-Fréderic Roch, a member of the Leroy family. It currently owns 14 ha of vineyards, mainly on Côte-des-Nuits plots. These properties include renowned Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards such as Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze. Organic viticulture and low-yield production are the hallmarks of this producer. His wines are delicious, with aromas of ripe red fruit, dark chocolate, oak or grilled herbs, depending on the vintage. They have spicy, red fruit flavors or herbaceous or spicy cinnamon flavors with a pleasant finish.
-Perrot Minot: this 12-hectare estate is run by Christophe Perrot-Minot, the 4th generation of winemakers. Production includes 7 Grands Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin and Clos Vougeot and 14 Premiers Crus from Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The house style is an aromatic, complex, mineral wine with beautiful layers of flavor and an impressive, long, slightly bitter finish.
-Jacky Truchot: the legendary Jacky Truchot founded this estate in 1978 before selling it to his neighbor, David Dubond. Although the estate has left little trace, its wines have remained under the radar of many collectors because of their elegance and refinement.
-Geantet Pansiot: the 12-hectare vineyard of this domaine is run under integrated viticulture, half of which is occupied by the village of Gevrey-Chambertin and 3 ½ ha by Burgundy. The wines of this 4th-generation family are generous, powerful and refined, in the image of true Gevrey-Chambertin.
-Tortochot: the 12 ha of this estate are run by Brigitte and Chantal Tortochot, now in their 4th generation as wine producers. Chambertin AOC and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru are the main wines produced by this estate. The wines they produce offer excellent value for money compared with other estates of the same quality. These are rare, pure, fresh, balanced and refined wines that will quickly find their place in the cellars of discerning collectors.
-Domaine de la Vougeraie: this 37-hectare estate in Prémeaux boasts an enviable portfolio of some thirty biodynamically farmed appellations. It produces 6 Grands Crus, including Musigny, Bonnes Mares, Clos Vougeot, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. Its red wines have a medium garnet color and a nose of raspberry, cherry, wet stone or forest floor. On tasting, they have a velvety texture thanks to tannins that coat the cherry and wet earth flavors with excellent acidity. The finish is long and pleasant.
-Dujac: the 17 ha of this domaine, founded by Jacques Seysses in 1967, include 7 Grands Crus parcels, as well as magnificent Premiers Crus including Malconsorts in Vosne and Aux Combottes in Gevrey. The entire estate was certified organic in 2008. It produces fine wines with elegant aromas of cherry, tobacco and wild flowers, with medium body enhanced by raspberry flavors, sweet spices and an effervescent finish that fans out on the finish.
-Joseph Roty: the current directors of this Côte des Nuits estate are in their 11th generation since 1710. The 12-hectare family vineyard produces Grands Crus, Premiers Crus and village appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. 80% of production is exported. As a result, its products are often out of stock, as they are offered in limited quantities. Our wines have a seductive, refined style, with an intense, generous nose, silky, ripe tannins and a juicy, spicy mouthfeel. They have good aging potential.
-Ponsot: a biodynamic estate producing one of Burgundy's finest red wines. Its wines have a fantastic, fruity, tarry nose. The palate is concentrated, spicy, well-structured with a little tannin and a deep finish.
-Domaine Leroy: the 17 ha of this estate, founded by Jacques Seysses in 1967, include 7 Grands Crus parcels and some magnificent Premiers Crus, including Malconsorts in Vosne and Aux Combottes in Gevrey. The entire estate was certified organic in 2008. It produces fine wines with elegant aromas of cherry, tobacco and wild flowers, with medium body enhanced by raspberry flavors, sweet spices and an effervescent finish that fans out on the finish.
-Denis Mortet: in the 90s, this domaine was a benchmark for pinot noir in the Burgundy wine world with its Gevrey-Chambertin crus. His wines were sumptuous, opulent before becoming what they are today: elegant, fine with a hint of minerality.
-Camus père et fils: this estate already existed in the 18th century. Today, it produces Grands Crus and Premier Crus. Its wines have a mineral, discreet or textured nose. Intense on the palate, with impressive length and penetrating or sustained acidity.
-Jadot: this domaine is also a key player in Burgundy wine production. Its 60 ha of vineyards produce a large number of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus. Its red Grands Crus have powerful aromas of undergrowth, red berries and mushrooms. The flavor palette features notes of red fruits, herbs or minerals with heavy tannins.
-Bouchard père et fils: this 130-hectare estate is one of the oldest wine houses in Beaune, having been founded in 1731. Its portfolio of wines comprises some one hundred climats, including Grands crus, premiers crus, villages, regional appellations and appellation de Bourgogne, as well as 4 monopoles. It is renowned for the exceptional quality and diversity of its wines.
-Mugneret Gibourg: this estate has been in existence since 1933. It is now run by the third generation. Its red wines have aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, black plum, wood smoke, spice and truffle, with a structured, balanced palate and a long finish.
