Pomerol

Appellation Bordeaux Pomerol

Pomerol is both a wine-growing region in the Gironde département and a type of red wine. It is also the smallest appellation among the Bordeaux fine wine regions. It is relatively recent and does not have a classification system like the other Bordeaux AOCs. Nevertheless, the best vintages of this appellation are snapped up by wine lovers. In this guide, we'll review the region's terroir and the best wines in this Bordeaux Pomerol appellation

Terroir of Bordeaux Pomerol appellation

This red wine appellation is located on the right bank of the Dordogne river. Unlike other Bordeaux wines, which use a classification system such as the historic 1855 classification, there are no criteria for classifying Pomerol châteaux and estates. However, this region is the birthplace of three of Bordeaux's top-selling wines: Petrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The total surface area of vineyards in this appellation is around 790 ha. Pomerol's terroir influences the characteristics and styles of wines in this appellation. It is characterized by sandy-clay, gravelly soils with blue clays. The proximity of bodies of water such as the Gironde and the Bay of Biscay confers a temperate oceanic climate that is favorable to wine maturation. However, rains during the harvest can cause gray rot in the grapes, leading to a decline in quality and quantity. Merlot is the region's emblematic grape variety. It occupies 80% of the vineyards. Cabernet franc is the second most widely planted grape variety, occupying 15% of vineyards. The remaining 5% is planted with Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Around 66% of Pomerol wines are a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc

Our list of the best wine producers in the Bordeaux Pomerol appellation

-Pétrus: at the top of the list of the world's most famous wines are the wines of Pétrus, renowned for their rarity and high price. The 11.4 ha vineyard of this prestigious château covers half of the "Boutonnière", an iron-rich region of sand and blue clay. This gives Pétrus its distinctive richness, elegance and concentration. The wines from this estate are indeed aromatically complex, with notes of fresh flowers, ripe fruit, herbs and earth. The palate benefits from silky, fleshy textures with a smooth finish. Its best vintages reveal the full potential of their true essence after 2 to 3 decades. Take a tour of the site to choose the full-bodied, velvety, opulent wine that will grace your table this holiday season!
-La violette: this tiny vineyard of less than 2 ha is also a real gem. It produces exceptional wines with a fragrant bouquet of fruit, undergrowth, lavender, spices, flowers, chocolate... depending on the vintage. The palate reveals a creamy, rich texture with fine acidity. This undeniably beautiful wine is characterized by the haunting scent of violets. A must-taste!
-Le Pin: this château is located near the village of Catusseau in Libourne. It has belonged to the Thienpot family since 1979. Merlot is the grape variety planted on most of the estate's 2.7 ha of vineyards. The terroir is composed of deep gravel, clay, sand and iron oxide deposits. This producer was one of the first to carry out alcoholic fermentation in barrels on the banks of the Dordogne. Its wines have an exotic style. In the best vintages, they display a concentrated, fresh, long character with notes of wild fruit, citrus, undergrowth, opulent perfumes and a silky mouthfeel leading to a decadent, textured finish. Production is limited to 600-700 cases per year. This is reflected in its price. Its wines may be better with 7 or 10 years in bottle, but it is not advisable to keep them for more than 2 decades.
-Lafleur: this château is a tiny 4.5-hectare estate run by Sylvie and Jacques Guinadeau. Located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, it adjoins the LaFleur Petrus estate. It is also one of Pomerol's elite producers. Its terroir is composed of deep soils enriched by iron and potassium deposits. Yields are low, but the best vintages from this producer have an ageing capacity of over 5 decades. Like the other wines in this appellation, Lafleur's wines also possess a unique expression. The best vintages are full-bodied, powerful, opulent and elegant, with an exotic character and mineral, woody and fruity notes. These excellent wines, ideal for investment, can show their full depth and complexity in 1 to 5 decades.
-Trotanoy: Jean-Pierre Mouiex has owned this château since 1953. Its 8 ha of vineyards are located on a plateau, about 1 km from the Pétrus estate. Gravel and deposits of black clay and iron lie in the vineyards. Harvesting at this château takes place well before at other estates, as it has a slightly warmer microclimate than other châteaux. Wines from this estate have distinctive aromas of flowers, spices, incense, truffles and ripe plums, depending on the vintage. On tasting, they reveal a velvety, opulent texture, both full-bodied and long, with a long, complex finish. Another breathtaking wine also worth discovering.
-Eglise Clinet: another chateau not to be missed in Pomerol production. 5.5 ha are planted with vines on this estate owned by Denis Durantou. Its terroir is composed of gravelly and clayey soils with natural slopes. This produces wines with complex aromas of truffles, flowers, grass and fruit, and a sensual, full-bodied, opulent, silky mouthfeel. The best vintages can be drunk young.
-La Fleur Pétrus: this château's 18.7 ha of vineyards produce highly aromatic wines with a nose of truffles, fruit, licorice, cocoa, a lush, velvety texture and crushed velvet tannins.
-Vieux Château Certan: this 14-hectare single vineyard produces wines that are also regularly ranked by the world press. These are elegant, full-bodied, rich wines with complex aromas of flowers, fruit, chocolate, spices, damp earth, truffles and a texture of pure silk. This type of wine has a great capacity for aging. This allows it to develop greater complexity and opulence.
-La Conseillante: this estate's 13 ha of vines produce sweet, fresh, fruity, refined, sexy wines with velvety, elegant tannins and a long finish. They offer a sublime experience for palate and nose.
-Hosanna: this château's 4.45-hectare vineyard sits atop the famous Pomerol plateau. The wines from this estate are bursting with dark, juicy fruit notes and nuances of truffle, chocolate, smoke and earth. On the palate, they are deep, rich and concentrated, with a focused, fresh and persistent finish.
-Château de l'Evangile: this prestigious estate produces subtle, elegant wines from its 14.1 hectares. The limited production of 5,000 cases adopts a rich, elegant, opulent style that can be breathtaking in the best vintages.
-Nénin: This château is owned by Jean-Hubert and Michel Delon, proprietors of Château Léoville-Las-cases. The 32-hectare vineyard produces deeply colored wines, with hints of flowers, fruit, cedar, herbs, damp earth, licorice and a savory, powerful or sweet palate with a spicy finish. These are wines destined to age well.
-Gazin: this château's 26-hectare vineyard adjoins those of Evangile and Pétrus. It produces wines with layers of concentrated, ripe, silky-smooth fruit and hints of truffles. On the palate, they offer depth of flavor and can improve with a few years' cellaring.
-Bon pasteur: this estate's 7 ha vineyard produces well-balanced, supple, lush and fruity wines with sensual, seductive textures and a long finish.
-Château Clinet: finally, this estate's 11.5 ha vineyard produces sensual, powerful wines in the best vintages, with flavors of chocolate, flowers and spices. These wines benefit from good ageing potential, developing more complex aromatic textures and sensual flavours over time.
