Overview of Margaux terroir

This region is located 25 km north of Bordeaux. Its winegrowing history dates back almost 2000 years, to Roman times. By the 17th century, it had already made a name for itself as a producer of quality wines. It was this reputation that prompted US President Thomas Jefferson to visit some of the region's châteaux, including Château Margaux. However, many of these châteaux would have been downgraded if the 1855 classification had been modified. Fortunately, improved winemaking techniques and aggressive competition have encouraged many châteaux to produce quality wines. The Margaux terroir is characterized by a high gravel content, with some sand and limestone. This type of soil ensures excellent drainage and low nutrient levels. The vines dig deep to feed and ripen. This makes them stronger and more resistant. Authorized grape varieties in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carmenere, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The total surface area of the appellation's vineyards is 1335 ha

Our selection of the best Bordeaux margaux wines.

Nearly 80 estates and châteaux maintain vineyards in this appellation, which boasts 21 crus classés in the 1855 classification. Among them, Château Margaux and Château Palmer produce wines of remarkably consistent quality. Other châteaux, such as Château Brane Cantenac and Malescot St Exupéry, have also made their mark following restructuring. The best wines are tasting, pure wines with velvety textures. But as in every other wine region, vintages differ in style, character and price. While they may not be the most powerful and dense of Bordeaux wines, they can be distinguished by their intense floral character, which is sensual, elegant and fragrant. The best vintages can also age gracefully for decades
-Giscours: This vast 102-hectare vineyard was on the verge of bankruptcy when Albada Jelgersma bought it in the 1990s. The businessman turned things around by improving the quality of each vintage. The wines of this strong brand are characterized by their gentle elegance, purity, fine tannins and great roundness on the palate. They also evolve very well over the decades.
-Palmer: the 66-hectare vineyard of this château, located in the Cantenac area of Margaux, produces sensual wines of great beauty, consistently priced. Palmer has all the characteristics of a great Bordeaux wine: complex, elegant aromas, full-bodied and rich on the palate.
-Kirwan: Château Kirwan's 40-hectare vineyard is planted with a variety of grape varietals. Classified as Margaux's 3rd growth, the wines didn't deserve this status. But the Schÿler family set about developing the terroir and style of the wines with the help of oenologist Michel Rolland. The wines lost their lean character and became fuller-bodied, more floral and impressively balanced.
-Brane Cantenac: Classified as a 2nd growth, this 75-hectare vineyard produces great, racy, aromatic and complex wines. On tasting, they immediately stand out for their elegant, feminine, racy character, aromatic freshness and velvety texture. A little decanting is necessary for older vintages. Wines can reach full maturity after 1 to 3 decades.
-Lascombes: the vineyards of this château, owned by the MACSF group, extend over 120 hectares in the Margaux appellation. It is one of the largest vineyards of the 1855 crus classés. It has the advantage of occupying the most sought-after parcels in Margaux. This allows us to produce powerful, elegant wines rich in tannins. -Issan: the reputation of this brand dates back to the late 12th century, when it was served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet. Classified as the 3rd growth of Margaux, the wines from this 44-hectare estate are appreciated for their elegance and fruitiness. They offer the best tasting conditions after 12 to 30 years of ageing.
-Rauzan Gassies: this château's 28.5-hectare vineyard is located on an exceptional terroir, on the finest slopes in the Margaux appellation. This allows the grape varieties to reach maturity and produce well-structured, subtle and elegant wines. The wines develop their full potential after 1 to 2 decades of ageing, depending on the vintage, and taste wonderfully well.
-Prieuré Lichine: the 70-hectare vineyard of this château belonging to the Bellande family has also been given a new lease of life thanks to the advice of winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt. Classified as the 4th growth of Margaux, this vineyard produces supple, elegant wines with an aromatic bouquet characteristic of great Margaux wines. The wines reach their maximum maturity between 10 and 25 years.
-Malescot Saint-Exupéry: this château's vineyard extends over 30 hectares. After renovation work and investment in high-tech equipment to restore the brand's image, it has regained its superb reputation. The wines from this château, classified 3rd growth in Margaux, shine with their rich, creamy texture and supple, elegant tannins. These wines offer the best tasting conditions between 10 and 30 years depending on the vintage.
