This grand cru comes from a 1,814-hectare walled enclosure; the estate reports a harvest of 5 790 bottles for this vintage. The Wine Advocate awarded it 94/100 and recommended drinking between 1993 and 2010; James Suckling rates it 97/100. Critics describe a wine of great restraint, driven by a pure and refined expression of dried flowers, spices, tobacco and ripe fruit, with very fine tannins and a particularly long finish.

The Romanee-Conti is very backward in 1986. The fabulous nose of oriental spices, new oak, and ripe fruit is amply displayed, but on the palate the wine is tight, hard, and very rich but still mostly inaccessible. It has a smashingly long finish and should be drinkable between 1993 and 2010. This is among the few superstars of this vintage, but the 1986 is not for drinking soon-patience is most definitely required.

This sacred masterpiece needs no introduction. I was blown away by the purity and finesse to this; it was truly stunning, indulging every sense with intense dried flowers, spices and tobacco. On the palate it was medium-bodied with wonderful, fine tannins and a awe-inspiring finish. The sheer beauty on offer here from this DRC was sensational.
