Domaine Coche Dury

The Coche-Dury estate is a family-run business based in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune. Run by Raphaël Coche-Dury, it cultivates plots situated mainly in Meursault, supplemented in particular by vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie and Volnay. Its production consists mainly of Chardonnay whites and a smaller proportion of Pinot Noir reds.

Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Coche-Dury estate date back to the interwar period in Meursault. For a long time, a significant proportion of its production was sold in bulk to Burgundian wine merchants. From 1964 onwards, Georges Coche expanded the vineyard and steered the estate increasingly towards bottling on the premises. His son Jean-François subsequently took over the family business. In 1975, his marriage to Odile Dury led to the adoption of the name Coche-Dury. Jean-François gradually expanded the estate’s holdings, notably through the acquisition of plots in the climats of Meursault and in Volnay. Raphaël Coche-Dury joined the estate in 1997 and initially worked alongside his father. He is now solely responsible for the estate’s management, the running of the vineyard and the winemaking. The estate currently cultivates around 10.5 hectares under vine, with the majority of the land situated in the commune of Meursault.

Slate, citrus, smoke and crushed rocks come to life in the 2010 Meursault Les Chevalieres. In 2010, the Chevalieres is utterly captivating, with seemingly endless layers of fruit and an explosive, totally engaging personality. The pedigree of the vintage is evident. This is a fabulous showing from Coche. Anticipated maturity: 2016+. (Not yet released) Jean-Francois Coche’s 2010s have turned out just as I hoped they would, which is to say the wines are breathtaking. On average, yields were down 40%, so these already highly coveted, rare wines are going to be even more impossible to find than usual. Coche is adamant that opening his top 2010s before age ten is a total waste, something he repeated a few times during my visit. Accordingly, Coche doesn’t plan on releasing the Corton-Charlemagne for another few years. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste all of the 2010s from bottle, but this sample is a good representation of the vintage. Intense nose reminiscent of cordite. Stinky mineral nose. Very exciting in sulphidey Coche style. Sweet start. Easy and open. Lovely for impatient white burgundy lovers. Great stuff.
