Histoire du domaine

The estate was founded in Vosne-Romanée in 1858, following the union of the Arnoux and Salbreux winegrowing families. It subsequently took the name Domaine Robert Arnoux when Robert Arnoux took over the estate in 1957 following the death of his father, Charles Arnoux. Robert Arnoux developed the estate’s in-house bottling operations from the late 1950s and early 1960s onwards. Following his death in February 1995, his daughter Florence Arnoux and her husband Pascal Lachaux continued to run the estate. The estate took the name Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux from the 2007 vintage onwards. Charles Lachaux joined the family business in 2011 and has been in charge of winemaking since the 2012 vintage. Under his leadership, the estate has adopted practices including biodynamics, eco-grazing, goblet pruning, higher trellising and the cessation of leaf removal. Since 2012, winemaking has been carried out using whole bunches, with short vatting periods and minimal intervention. From the 2022 harvest onwards, the estate has replaced oak barrels with stoneware vessels for ageing.

Les Chaumes (Vosne Romanée)

Les Chaumes is a Premier Cru classified climat of the Vosne-Romanée appellation, located south of the village, below Aux Malconsorts and above Clos des Réas. Sources specifically dedicated to the climat indicate an eastern exposure and an altitude of around 250 meters. The soils are described as moderately deep, fairly stony, and composed of marly-limestone materials. The specifications more generally describe the Vosne-Romanée sector as a gently sloping hillside, with soils resulting from the erosion of Jurassic limestones and, at the foot of the slope, Tertiary conglomerates.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes offers up pretty aromas of rose petals, cherries, dried flowers and cinnamon, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate, with firm, chewy structuring tannins that were rather prominent when I tasted the wine. Let's see how it shows from the bottle.

Their 0.74-ha parcel traverses the cru from E to W. Mainly clay soils. 50% whole bunch. Maximum 20% new oak.Sweet red cherry. Delicate but complex with a touch of spice but it seems to be fruit spice not oak spice, since there’s no more than 20% new oak here, and it is hidden behind the fruit. A hint of exoticism. There’s a creaminess, really seductive. Multilayered even now. Succulent, fine-grained, elegant but with lots of fruit even if it all about harmony not about fruit. Delicate beauty, the tannins offering just enough friction to slow the wine across the palate. Such flavour and delicacy combined is quite an achievement.
