Domain des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 1945 -5cm

The 1945 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays is a red wine from Burgundy, a Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis produced by Domaine des Lambrays from Pinot Noir. It originates from the Clos-des-Lambrays, a historic walled vineyard in the Côte de Nuits of which the estate owns the majority of its 8.66 hectares. The 1945 vintage experienced late frost followed by summer drought, resulting in a naturally very limited harvest. The estate presents it as a wine built for long-term cellaring, included in the selection that contributed to the official recognition of the Clos as a Grand Cru in 1981.

Histoire du domaine

Le Clos des Lambrays first appears in February 1365 under the name ‘Cloux des Lambrey’ in a title deed belonging to the Abbey of Cîteaux. The vineyard belonged to the abbey during the Middle Ages, before being gradually divided up – particularly during the French Revolution – amongst more than seventy owners. The wine merchant Louis Joly acquired a significant portion of it in 1836, after which Camille and Albert Rodier continued the process of land consolidation from 1866 onwards. A major land consolidation is recorded in 1879. In 1938, the estate was passed on to Renée Cosson. In 1979, Fabien and Louis Saier bought the property together with Roland Pelletier de Chambure and undertook the restoration of the vineyards, the enclosure walls and the buildings, with Thierry Brouin as estate manager. Clos des Lambrays was officially granted Grand Cru status on 27 April 1981. Following the Saiers’ financial difficulties in the mid-1990s, Günter and Ruth Freund acquired the estate. Following the death of Günter Freund, LVMH became the owner of Domaine des Lambrays in 2014. Jacques Devauges, former estate manager at Clos de Tart, took over the management of the estate in 2019. Additional plots were incorporated into the vineyard from 2021 onwards, and the 2022 vintage is the estate’s first to be certified as organically farmed.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos-des-Lambrays

Le Clos des Lambrays is a physically defined climat entirely enclosed by walls, formed by the cadastral lieux-dits Les Bouchots, Les Meix Rentiers, and Les Larrets. Located in the heart of the Morey-Saint-Denis hillside between 260 and 350 meters, it features a gently sloping lower section and a steeper upper section, oriented towards the rising sun. The soils are shallow, clayey, carbonated, and well-draining, beneath a layer of colluvium mixing clays, red silts, gravel, and limestone pebbles. The substratum combines Bajocian crinoidal limestones, marls, and Bathonian limestones in the highest sectors.

Histoire de la parcelle

The clos is attested in February 1365 under the name "Cloux des Lambrey" in a property title of the Cîteaux Abbey. Fragmented after the Revolution, it had 74 owners before a long consolidation process initiated in the 19th century. 19th-century wine classifications placed its parcels in first or second class, but the AOC Clos des Lambrays was only officially recognized by the decree of April 27, 1981. The restorations and replantings undertaken in the last third of the 20th century contributed to the restoration of its unity and renown.
