Histoire du domaine

The origin of the name Certan dates back to ancient times, whilst the history of the wine estate is linked to the de May family, of Scottish origin, who are said to have founded it in the 16th century. The estate adopted the name Vieux Château Certan in 1745, a date also recognised by the appellation’s governing body as the year the vineyard was established. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner and had the château renovated; its general appearance has been preserved. Georges Thienpont and his wife Joséphine acquired the property in the spring of 1924. On the death of Georges Thienpont in 1962, his son Léon took over the running of the estate. A significant portion of the vineyard was replanted following the frost of 1956, and a new winery was built in 1972. Alexandre Thienpont succeeded his father Léon in 1985. He subsequently worked alongside his son Guillaume, who has been involved in the technical management of the estate since 2011. Winemaking is now overseen by Guillaume Thienpont, at an estate that remains family-owned.

The 1959 is not so simple, offering little more than earthy and very leathery tones on the nose. However, the medium-bodied palate shows an enticing, silky texture and a hint of grip to the structured finish. A touch of bitterness adds an extra dimension at the end. Drink now.

Fiona Morrison MW’s birth year. ‘This vintage gave Bordeaux a boost since it produced both quality and quantity. January was changeable. February was warm with cool nights. Spring like weather in March with heavy rain at end of month. April and May warm with good weather during flowering. Summer dry, mild and sunny. Rain showers in September helped grapes. Picking from 18 September. Some difficulty during the fermentation because of the warm weather.’ Rather a disappointment. A little old and drying without the expected opulence. Slightly cheesy finish and some obvious VA. What a shame!
