Château La Gaffeliere 2015 magnum

Château La Gaffelière 2015 is a red wine from Saint-Émilion, classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, produced by Château La Gaffelière for the Malet-Roquefort family. It is a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlot grapes were harvested from September 28 to October 15, followed by the Cabernet Francs from October 8 to 15. Following plot-by-plot vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, the wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% were new. Wine Spectator awards it 95/100 and recommends drinking it from 2020 to 2040; The Wine Advocate gives it 94+ and places its drinking window between 2021 and 2045; James Suckling awards it 94/100, suggesting it be drunk from 2022 onwards. Critics highlight notes of dark fruit and plums, enhanced by spicy, oaky, and earthy accents, supported by a fine tannic structure, freshness, and length.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 La Gaffeliere has a slightly reticent, broody nose of black truffles, fertile loam and mossy bark over a core of warm plums, crushed black berries and black cherries plus a touch of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied with firm and very finely grained tannins with layers of softly spoken fruit and great freshness, it finishes long.

Impressive deep-set dark cherries, blueberries and dark plums here with neatly fitted spicy oak, which adds immediate complexity. Deep, long and fresh with vibrant acidity, underpinning ripe blackberries, plums and hints of chocolate. Superb wine. Try from 2022.

Enticing warm plum, fig and blackberry compote notes roll through, inlaid with singed alder and tobacco accents. There's a light tug of warm cast iron and another wave of fruit after that, all supported by well-buried chalky minerality. This is a very strong showing and has put on some weight since the barrel tasting. Best from 2020 through 2040. 6,665 cases made. Published on March 31, 2018

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. Dark garnet core. Lighter at the rim. Rich and plush on the nose. Clearly a solar year, the expression ripe and creamy with dark-fruit and chocolate notes. Full and round on the palate. Oozes extract. Powerful structure but coated by the fruit. Perhaps a bit too extracted but just about carries the day. Some potential but you’ll need to like the luxuriant, modern style.
