Champagne Jacques Selosse Contraste Blanc de Noirs, disgorged 2007 Bottle (75cl)

The Champagne Jacques Selosse Contraste Blanc de Noirs is a non-vintage Grand Cru champagne, disgorged in 2007, crafted exclusively from Pinot Noir. A historic cuvée from Jacques Selosse, Contraste was later renamed La Côte Faron. It comes from a parcel of Pinot Noir located in Aÿ, a Grand Cru village in Champagne, and relies on a reserve managed according to the solera method. This reference thus combines the identity of a single-plot blanc de noirs with the signature aging style of the Selosse house.

Histoire du domaine

Jacques Selosse moved to Avize in 1947, although he did not come from a family of winegrowers. He founded the estate with his wife in 1949, starting with just a few plots of vines. During his early years, he mainly sold his grapes to wine merchants. Experiments in winemaking with a view to producing his own champagne began in 1959. The estate’s first winemaking took place in 1964, yielding 2,500 bottles. Anselme Selosse joined the estate in 1974 after training in Beaune, and took over its management in 1980. Under his leadership, the estate developed a viticultural approach based first on organic farming from 1990, then biodynamics from 1996, and finally an approach inspired by permaculture from 2002. He also introduced the practice of vinifying and maturing wine from individual plots in barrels. Guillaume Selosse joined his father at the estate in 2012 and has been in charge since 2018. The vineyard now covers 8.3 hectares, spread across 54 plots, mainly classified as grands crus.

Cuvée

Contraste

Contraste is a single-plot Champagne blanc de noirs cuvée made exclusively from Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit La Côte Faron in Aÿ. Built on a perpetual reserve system started in 1994, it was later renamed "Aÿ La Côte Faron" and integrated into Jacques Selosse's Lieux-Dits collection.

Cuvée creation year
1994
Style of the cuvée
A powerful, vinous, and structured Blanc de Noirs, marked by the maturity of Pinot Noir from Aÿ and the evolving complexity brought by the perpetual reserve. Its oak aging and low dosage contribute to a broad, deep, dry, and expressive profile.
Position within the range
The precursor to the Lieux-Dits, which became Aÿ La Côte Faron within Jacques Selosse's single-plot collection.

Histoire de la cuvée

Contraste is the first single-plot expression of Pinot Noir from Aÿ marketed by Jacques Selosse. Its perpetual reserve was initiated in 1994. The cuvée was subsequently named after its original lieu-dit, Aÿ La Côte Faron, when it joined the collection of the six Lieux-Dits.
