Histoire du domaine
The Bruichladdich distillery was founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, who came from a Scottish family already involved in distilling. Located in the village of Bruichladdich on the island of Islay, it experienced several periods of closure, linked in particular to wars and economic difficulties. It closed in 1994 for a period of seven years. In December 2000, a group of private investors led by wine merchant Mark Reynier acquired the site. Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and master distiller Jim McEwan relaunched operations in 2001, following the restoration of the historic facilities. The distillery set up its own bottling plant on the island in 2003 and, in 2004, launched a programme to source barley grown on Islay. Rémy Cointreau acquired Bruichladdich in 2012. Adam Hannett, who joined the company in 2004 and succeeded Jim McEwan as head of distillation in 2015, was appointed Master Blender in 2025.
Orpheus
Orpheus refers to the Octomore 02.2 edition, a heavily peated Islay single malt released by Bruichladdich. This five-year-old expression is distinguished by a secondary maturation in French oak casks originating from Château Pétrus, following an initial aging in American oak.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2009
- Style of the cuvée
- A very intensely peated single malt, combining a powerful smoky and maritime expression with the roundness, dark fruit, and tannic structure imparted by red wine casks.
- Position within the range
- A historic limited edition from Octomore, precursor to the ".2" expressions aged or finished in European oak.
Histoire de la cuvée
Launched in 2009 after Octomore 02.1, Orpheus is the first named edition in the Octomore ".2" line, dedicated to maturations involving European oak. It established the principle within the range of a heavily peated Octomore enriched by the influence of wine casks.
