Histoire du domaine
The estate traces its origins back to 1695, according to archival documents held on the property. In the mid-19th century, Louis Sarraute, an importer who had returned from Cuba, acquired Château Caillou. The estate was classified as a second cru of Sauternes and Barsac in the 1855 classification. Following the death of Louis Sarraute, against a backdrop of the wine industry crises of the late 19th century, the vineyard was put up for sale. Joseph Ballan bought it at auction in 1909. His daughter, Reine Ballan, continued to run the estate with her husband, Joseph Bravo, from 1943 onwards; the couple worked with the assistance of the oenologist Émile Peynaud. In the 1990s, their children Jean-Bernard and Marie-José inherited the estate. Since 1997, Marie-José Pierre has been the sole owner and manages the estate with her husband Michel Pierre. Their sons, Jean-Noël and Sébastien Pierre, are now helping to carry on the family business.
