Histoire du domaine
The history of the Philipponnat family in Champagne dates back to 1522, the year the house records as Apvril Le Philipponnat’s arrival in the region. His descendants, who served as royal mayors of Aÿ on several occasions, had the family coat of arms registered in the Armorial de France in 1696; it still appears on the house’s bottles. From the mid-19th century onwards, the Philipponnats, then vineyard owners and wine merchants, began marketing sparkling Champagnes under their own name. In 1910, Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat formalised the family business by setting up their company and acquiring the cellars of the Château de Mareuil. In 1935, Pierre Philipponnat acquired the Clos des Goisses from several winegrowers, which he consolidated into a single block in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The house was acquired by the Boizel Chanoine Champagne group in 1997, which became Lanson-BCC in 2010. Charles Philipponnat is now its chairman. Thierry Garnier, cellar master, works alongside him on decisions regarding blending and winemaking.
Clos des Goisses
Clos des Goisses is a single-vineyard cuvée that is always vintage-dated, coming from the eponymous walled vineyard located in Mareuil-sur-Ay. This south-facing chalky hillside is distinguished by its extreme slope and produces a wine combining great maturity, intensity, and mineral tension. The cuvée is predominantly vinified in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation, aged extensively on the lees, and low-dosage.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the old Champagne dialect word "Gois" or "Goisse," which designates a very steep hillside, in reference to the sharp incline of the clos.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1935
- Style of the cuvée
- A vinous, profound, and intense Champagne, marked by high fruit maturity balanced by the mineral tension of the chalk. Its powerful, structured, and persistent profile is designed for gastronomy and long aging.
- Position within the range
- An emblematic single-vineyard cuvée and the ultimate expression of Maison Philipponnat's pursuit of excellence.
Histoire de la cuvée
Pierre Philipponnat acquired Clos des Goisses in 1935 and chose to vinify its grapes separately, creating Champagne's first single-cru, now described as a single-vineyard cuvée. The collection of vintages is documented as nearly uninterrupted since 1935. Since 1988, the Maison has produced this cuvée every year, with a strict selection that generally limits production to a portion of the vineyard's potential.
