Histoire du domaine
Château d’Issan has its origins in a former 12th-century fiefdom, then known as La Mothe-Cantenac. From 1575 onwards, five generations of the d’Essenault family succeeded one another at the helm of the estate and gradually gave it the name Issan. The medieval château was replaced in the 17th century by the present building, whilst a boundary wall was erected around part of the vineyards in 1644. Following the period under the Foix de Candale family and the upheavals of the Revolution, Jean-Baptiste Duluc took over the estate in 1824 and began work on the vineyard. In 1866, Gustave Roy had gravity-fed cellars built and oversaw the replanting following the damage caused by phylloxera. The château was classified as a third grand cru in the 1855 Imperial Classification. Neglected during the interwar period, the estate was acquired by the Cruse family in 1945. Under Lionel Cruse, the château was restored, the facilities modernised and the vineyard restructured. Emmanuel Cruse continued these investments from 1998 onwards. In 2012, Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti joined forces with the Cruse family. Winemaking is now overseen by technical director Éric Pellon and cellar master Clément Di Costanzo.
