Whisky Bowmore Finest Single Malt Black Bowmore 1964

The Bowmore Black Bowmore 1964 31 Year Old is a Scottish single malt produced by Bowmore on the Isle of Islay. This amber expression of the Black Bowmore cuvée was aged for 31 years in an Oloroso sherry butt. Hailing from a 1964 distillation, the Black Bowmore series was matured in the distillery's No. 1 Vaults in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry. The flavor profile published by Bowmore evokes exotic fruits, caramel, orange, and dark cherry, lingering with notes of coffee, smoked tobacco, and spices.

Bowmore

Bowmore is a Scotch single malt distillery situated in the village of Bowmore, on the island of Islay, on the shores of Loch Indaal. The brand cites 1779 as the date of its first documented mention and presents itself as Islay’s oldest distillery. The distillery is now owned by the Suntory Global Spirits group and still retains, in particular, its floor malting areas and its No. 1 Vaults.

Histoire du domaine

David Simson obtained a lease on the Bowmore estate in 1766 and established a distillery there. Bowmore cites 1779 as the year of the distillery’s first known mention, although some specialist sources indicate that a distilling licence was not documented until 1816. The Simson family controlled the distillery until it was acquired by William and James Mutter in 1837–1838. The Mutter brothers expanded the distillery and had a water canal built from the River Laggan. John Bell Sherriff bought Bowmore in 1887, before it came under the ownership of a London consortium from 1892 onwards. The Sherriff family took back the distillery in 1925. Production was halted during the Second World War, when the site was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force between 1940 and 1943. William Grigor acquired Bowmore in 1950, then Stanley P. Morrison bought the distillery in 1963 and developed its reputation as a single malt. Suntory acquired a 35 per cent stake in 1989, then took full control of Bowmore in 1994. The distillery is now part of Suntory Global Spirits – the name adopted by Beam Suntory in 2024 – and David Turner is its distillery manager.

Cuvée

Black Bowmore

Black Bowmore is a collection of rare single malts from distillates produced in 1964 and aged for a long time in Oloroso sherry casks in Bowmore's No.1 Vaults. The first edition, aged 29 years, was released in 1993. Five editions were subsequently produced from this 1964 heritage, up to the Black Bowmore 50 Year Old presented as the final rediscovery.

Origin of the cuvée name
The name "Black Bowmore" refers to the exceptionally dark color, described as pearlescent black, acquired during aging in former Oloroso sherry casks.
Cuvée creation year
1993
Style of the cuvée
Very old, rich, and concentrated single malt, marked by exotic and dark fruits, honey, chocolate, and coffee nuances, with Bowmore's characteristic peated smoke and a strong Oloroso sherry imprint.
Position within the range
Historic prestige collection, among the rarest and most emblematic limited editions of Bowmore.

Histoire de la cuvée

The distillate behind Black Bowmore was produced on November 5, 1964, when the distillery adopted indirect steam heating, then placed in Oloroso sherry casks kept in the No.1 Vaults. Bowmore launched a first 29-year-old edition in 1993, followed by editions in 1994, 1995, and 2007. A final batch rediscovered in the stock records was released in 2016 as the Black Bowmore 50 Year Old, the fifth and final edition of the historic collection.
