Histoire du domaine
Vine cultivation has been documented since 1461 at a place known as Pujau, on the Haut-Bailly hilltop. The modern vineyard took shape in the 17th century under the impetus of Firmin Le Bailly and Nicolas de Leuvarde, who established its boundaries and gave it a commercial dimension from 1630 onwards. In the 18th century, the estate passed to Christophe Lafaurie de Monbadon, then to his son Laurent, who was mayor of Bordeaux in 1805. Alcide Bellot des Minières acquired the estate in 1872 and played a major role in building its reputation in the late 19th century. In particular, in 1905 he had a plot planted with a mixture of grape varieties, of which four hectares of century-old vines remain today. The estate was sold to Frantz Malvesin in 1918, before undergoing a period of decline linked to the economic crisis and the two world wars. Daniel Sanders bought Haut-Bailly in 1955, revived the vineyard with his son Jean and created a second wine in 1967, followed by a third in 1987. Robert G. Wilmers acquired the château in 1998 and entrusted the general management to Véronique Sanders in 2000. Following Robert Wilmers’ death in December 2017, his family continued to run the estate; a new winery, inaugurated at the end of 2020, has been used for ageing the wines since 2021. Gabriel Vialard is the technical director and has direct responsibility for winemaking.
