Domaine Louis Carillon

Louis Carillon et Fils was a family-run estate based in Puligny-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Historically cultivating 12 hectares of vineyards, the estate was divided in 2010 between Louis Carillon’s two sons, François and Jacques, who subsequently established their own independent estates.

Histoire du domaine

The Louis Carillon et Fils estate was part of the Carillon family’s long-standing presence in Puligny-Montrachet. Archives mention a Jehan Carillon in 1520, whilst the family has been documented in the village since 1632. Phylloxera and then the First World War severely affected the family vineyard, and the vines were replanted after 1918. In 1960, the estate moved away from mixed farming to focus solely on Chardonnay. Under Louis Carillon, his sons François and Jacques became involved in the family business. Before it was divided, the estate comprised 12 hectares of vines, mainly in Puligny-Montrachet, with plots in Premier Cru vineyards and in Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In 2010, the family vineyard was divided between François and Jacques Carillon. Louis Carillon et Fils then ceased to exist as an independent entity, replaced by the François Carillon and Jacques Carillon estates.

Parcelle & terroir

Bâtard-Montrachet (Puligny Montrachet)

Bâtard-Montrachet is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated climat, shared between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. It occupies the lower part of the slope, exposed mainly to the east and south-east, at around 240 to 250 metres of altitude. Its brown limestone soils are thicker and more clayey towards the foothill, with clay colluvium relatively poor in stones. The substrate consists mainly of platy limestones from the Middle Jurassic, attributed to the Callovian.

Histoire de la parcelle

The "Bâtard" climat was already distinguished from Montrachet in the 18th century, although its wines were long assimilated with those of Montrachet. A 1921 judgment consecrated the use of the name "Bâtard-Montrachet" and the local hierarchy of grand crus. The AOC was recognized by the decree of 31 July 1937; its plot area was initially demarcated in 1939, then approved by the INAO in 1988 for Chassagne-Montrachet and in 1989 for Puligny-Montrachet.
