Clos Saint Jean CDP Rouge Combe des Fous 2016 Magnum

Le Clos Saint Jean La Combe des Fous 2016 is a red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhône Valley. This cuvée blends 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarèse. It comes from the La Crau terroir, associated with the cuvée by the estate, where sandy soils contribute to its elegance and tannic finesse. Centenarian Grenache vines form the foundation of this blend, complemented by Syrah and the Cinsault-Vaccarèse duo.

Clos Saint Jean

Clos Saint-Jean is a family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape managed by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel. Its 47 hectares of vines are predominantly planted on rolled pebble terroirs, notably on the La Crau plateau. The estate produces its classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape as well as several parcel-specific or selection cuvées, among which are La Combe des Fous and Deus Ex Machina.

Histoire du domaine

Clos Saint-Jean has its origins in the early 20th century in the work of Edmond Tacussel, great-grandfather of Pascal and Vincent Maurel. The estate traces its creation to 1905 and indicates that the grape variety blend of its red Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains faithful to that defined back then by Edmond Tacussel. Following the untimely passing of their father in 1982, Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over an estate that was then producing only about 6,000 bottles and set about preserving and then restructuring the family heritage. A new direction was initiated in 2003 following their meeting with oenologist Philippe Cambie: his guidance evolved the winemaking methods and contributed to the affirmation of cuvées endowed with distinct identities, notably Deus Ex Machina. The estate continues to be managed today by Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with the gradual involvement of Valentin, Hugo, and Claire Maurel.

Cuvée

Combe des Fous

La Combe des Fous is a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape dominated by Grenache from a vineyard planted in 1905, complemented by Syrah, Cinsault, and Vaccarèse. It expresses a sector of La Crau where the presence of sand fosters, according to the estate, the elegance and finesse of the tannins.

Origin of the cuvée name
The name evokes Edmond Tacussel, considered mad by his contemporaries when he planted a combe in La Crau with very large pebbles around 1905-1910.
Cuvée creation year
2003
Style of the cuvée
A deep and concentrated red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, yet striving for an elegant, harmonious, and finely tannic expression, with a more feminine profile than the heavily structured Deus Ex Machina.
Position within the range
An emblematic prestige cuvée of the estate, built on old Grenaches from La Crau.

Histoire de la cuvée

The cuvée was created with the 2003 vintage, amidst the estate's shift in stylistic direction guided by oenologist Philippe Cambie. Its name pays tribute to the audacity of great-grandfather Edmond Tacussel, who planted the vineyard in this stony combe in the early 20th century despite local skepticism.
