Histoire du domaine
The company’s origins date back to 1808, with the founding of Calvet et Compagnie on Rue de l’Hermitage in Tain. In 1897, Marius Chapoutier went into partnership with Rodolphe Delépine to form Delépine et Chapoutier, which at that time exported its wines to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Following Delépine’s departure in 1922, Marius renamed the company Chapoutier et Compagnie. In 1928, he acquired the La Ciboise estate, then in 1929 had a new winery built at the foot of the Hermitage hill. On his death in 1937, his son Marc succeeded him. In 1955, Marc renamed the company M. Chapoutier. Michel Chapoutier took over the management of the company in 1990, having launched the first single-vineyard selections in 1989. The conversion of the vineyard to biodynamic farming began at that time. Under his leadership, the company gradually acquired estates and vineyards in Australia from 1998, in Roussillon in 2000, in Portugal in 2007, and subsequently in Alsace and Spain, amongst other places. Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier have joined Michel and Corinne Chapoutier in the family business; Clément Bartschi currently serves as cellar master there.
Barbe Rac
Barbe Rac is a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape originating from a plot in the Barbe d'Asne sector, at the western extremity of the appellation. This single-vineyard selection is crafted exclusively from Grenache on a Quaternary terrace covered with large rolled pebbles. Aging in concrete vats is designed to preserve the expression of the grape variety and the terroir without any oak influence.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1989
- Style of the cuvée
- A powerful, full-bodied, and fleshy Châteauneuf-du-Pape, marked by ripe red fruits, herbs, spices, and licorice. Its high density, roundness, and long finish are accompanied by significant aging potential.
- Position within the range
- Single-Vineyard Selection, a category presented by M. Chapoutier as the flagship expression of his terroirs.
Histoire de la cuvée
The 1989 vintage marks the first documented bottling of Barbe Rac. It corresponds to the year Michel Chapoutier created the Maison's first Single-Vineyard Selections, designed to isolate and precisely express specific terroirs.
