Histoire du domaine
The history of the Philipponnat family in Champagne dates back to 1522, the year the house records as Apvril Le Philipponnat’s arrival in the region. His descendants, who served as royal mayors of Aÿ on several occasions, had the family coat of arms registered in the Armorial de France in 1696; it still appears on the house’s bottles. From the mid-19th century onwards, the Philipponnats, then vineyard owners and wine merchants, began marketing sparkling Champagnes under their own name. In 1910, Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat formalised the family business by setting up their company and acquiring the cellars of the Château de Mareuil. In 1935, Pierre Philipponnat acquired the Clos des Goisses from several winegrowers, which he consolidated into a single block in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The house was acquired by the Boizel Chanoine Champagne group in 1997, which became Lanson-BCC in 2010. Charles Philipponnat is now its chairman. Thierry Garnier, cellar master, works alongside him on decisions regarding blending and winemaking.
Les Cintres
Les Cintres is a confidential single-plot cuvée produced only in exceptional years from the steepest, sunniest and oldest planted central plots of Clos des Goisses. It is crafted using first-press juices, vinified entirely in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, and dosed as extra-brut. Only a portion of the harvest is allocated to this cuvée in order to preserve the balance of the classic Clos des Goisses.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name comes from the two contiguous plots "Les Petits Cintres" and "Les Grands Cintres", located in the heart of Clos des Goisses.
- Cuvée creation year
- 2006
- Style of the cuvée
- A powerful, vinous and concentrated Champagne, combining fruit intensity with a marked mineral freshness. Oak vinification and the absence of malolactic fermentation support its structure, tension and aging potential.
- Position within the range
- Rare and confidential single-plot cuvée, the most intense expression of Clos des Goisses.
Histoire de la cuvée
The first documented vintage is 2006. Philipponnat created this cuvée to isolate the most intense expression from the heart of Clos des Goisses, following a single-plot approach inspired by the Burgundian model: a place, a vintage and a very limited production.
