Histoire du domaine
The origins of this family-run estate in Volnay, formerly known as Domaine Réyane et Pascal Bouley, date back to the 1850s. After studying winemaking through an apprenticeship in the family estate and studying oenology in Dijon, Pierrick Bouley expanded his experience in New Zealand, notably at Felton Road in 2010. He then worked alongside his father before taking over the reins of the estate in 2014. Pierrick took full charge of vinification starting in 2016, and then the management of the entire vineyard in 2017. The estate was renamed Domaine Pierrick Bouley starting with the 2019 vintage, marking the transition to the sixth generation. The vineyard covers approximately 9 hectares divided into 41 parcels, with an average vine age close to 60 years.
Champans
Champans is a climat of Volnay located mid-slope, in the center of the appellation area, and officially recognized for the Premier Cru designation. Its south to south-east exposure, gentle slope, and stony cover favor drainage and sunshine. The upper part of the climat is more calcareous and light brown, while its lower part becomes more clayey, with brown to reddish soils. The substrate is notably described as a crinoidal limestone slab known as "pierre nacrée".

The climat appears as "En Champan" in the 1507 rental roll of the royal domain, among the Volnay vineyards formerly linked to the ducal estate. Champans features today in the official specifications of the AOC Volnay among the climats that can accompany the Premier Cru designation; the Volnay appellation was recognized on September 9, 1937.
