Jura Domaine Thomas Popy Ryokan 2018 Magnum (150cl)
Ryôkan 2018 is a white wine from the Jura region crafted by Thomas Popy and classified as Vin de France. This cuvée is dedicated to Chardonnay, specifically its local selection Melon à Queue Rouge. It is part of the ongoing work of this winemaker based in Mesnay, in the heart of the Jura vineyards. The 2018 vintage thus offers a precise reading of a Jura white wine from an independent producer, identified by his Ryôkan cuvée and its geographical origin.

Histoire du domaine
Originally from Beaujolais, Thomas Popy trained with winemakers such as Michel Guignier, Jean-Claude Lapalu, and Julie Balagny, before pursuing his viticultural and oenological training in the Jura in 2014. He also worked alongside Pierre Overnoy and, after settling in the region, with Emmanuel Houillon as well as Céline and Steve Gormally of Domaine Les Dolomies. Established with his family in Mesnay, he has built up an estate of approximately 1.8 hectares, primarily around the lieu-dit Sous la Roche Maldru, complemented by plots located in Arbois, Pupillin, and Montigny-lès-Arsures. His sole proprietorship for vine cultivation has been registered since 2011 and his headquarters have been located in Mesnay since 2017. In July 2024, he also founded and assumed the presidency of Thomas Popy SAS, a company dedicated to wine-merchant activities, the purchase of grapes, musts, and wines, as well as their vinification, aging, and commercialization.
Ryôkan
Ryôkan is a Chardonnay white wine marketed under the name Thomas Popy. The 2019 vintage blends three parcels of old vines: Clos Bareth, Guille Bouton and Sous La Roche du Feu, following separate aging in old barrels followed by refinement of the blend in a vat.
- Style of the cuvée
- Topped-up (ouillé) Jura Chardonnay with long aging, seeking balance, elegance, precision and a stony mineral expression.
- Position within the range
- White blended cuvée bringing together three parcels of Chardonnay over fifty years old.
Histoire de la cuvée
The cuvée is documented at least as far back as the 2018 vintage. For the 2019 vintage, the Chardonnays from the three parcels were aged separately for two years in old barrels, then blended and kept for an additional year in a vat.
