Histoire du domaine
The estate’s origins date back to the 1930s, when Alfred Cathiard, Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather and a native of Savoie, settled in Burgundy. He worked first for the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and then for the Domaine Lamarche, before acquiring his own plots of land. His son, André Cathiard, subsequently expanded the estate and began bottling part of the production under the family name. Sylvain Cathiard joined his father, then set up his own business before taking over the family vineyards when André retired in 1995. Sébastien Cathiard joined the estate in 2006. He gradually took charge of winemaking and now runs the estate; he has also been chairman of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard et Fils since 2019. Under his leadership, the estate has expanded its cultivated area, notably with vineyards in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and additional plots in the Côte de Nuits. The historic vineyard comprises plots in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, including, notably, Vosne-Romanée Premiers Crus and a small plot of Romanée-Saint-Vivant. Wine-making takes place at the estate in Vosne-Romanée under the supervision of Sébastien Cathiard and his team.
Aux Thorey
Aux Thorey is a climat in the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the northern part of the appellation towards Vosne-Romanée. The AOC specifications include it among the climats entitled to claim the Premier Cru designation and partially link it to the cadastral locality "Aux Torey". Local producers report clay-limestone and marly soils, but these observations pertain to their own parcels or the Clos de Thorey and do not uniformly characterize the entire climat.

- The name appears in the cadastral records as "Aux Torey". An ancient origin linked to the Gallo-Roman name Taurius or the Celtic root "turra", meaning a height, has been suggested without certainty.
