Domaine Jean Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Hommage à Louis 2022 Bottle (75cl)
The 2022 Domaine Jean Paul et Benoit Droin Hommage à Louis is a white Burgundy wine produced in the Chablis appellation and classified as a Grand Cru. This cuvée is crafted exclusively from Chardonnay. It comes from a parcel historically linked to the Les Clos climat, the designation of which was subject to a specific regulatory situation for this vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine is fermented in a combination of stainless steel vats and French oak barrels, followed by approximately ten months of ageing split between these two vessels.

Histoire du domaine
The Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin estate is part of the Droin family’s long-standing presence in the Chablis vineyards. The estate states that families bearing this name already owned vineyards in Chablis prior to 1537, whilst presenting this ancient lineage as plausible. The family has been cultivating vines in Chablis for nearly four centuries and, according to the estate’s website, Benoît Droin represents the thirteenth generation. In 1908, Louis Droin helped found the Chablis Winegrowers’ Union to combat fraud. He became president of the Union of Chablis Winegrowers and Owners in 1923, a year which also marked the start of the estate’s wines being sold in bottles. Marcel Droin co-founded the Yonne Wine Exhibition in 1949 and chaired the Yonne wine-growing associations from 1952 onwards. From 1973, Paul Droin began replanting the vineyard and developed the bottling of the estate’s production. Jean-Paul Droin joined the family estate in 1965; a first wine storehouse was built in 1981, and between 1984 and 1987 he and his wife Catherine acquired and rebuilt cellars in the centre of Chablis. Benoît Droin joined the estate in 1999 after training at the Beaune wine-growing college and obtaining the national oenology diploma in Dijon. Jean-Paul retired in 2014, whilst Benoît continues to run the estate, which bottles its entire production.
Hommage à Louis
Created starting from the 2020 vintage, Hommage à Louis uses the historical blend of three parcels previously commercialized under the Les Clos climat. The estate adopted this name when an administrative dispute temporarily prevented it from claiming Les Clos without modifying the blend. The 2023 official sheet still presents Hommage à Louis as a Chablis Grand Cru vinified in stainless steel tanks and barrels.

Histoire de la cuvée
A parcel taken over by Louis Droin in the 1920s was historically blended with the estate's other parcels in Les Clos. Following an administrative dispute regarding its location between Les Clos and Valmur, Benoît Droin kept the blend but temporarily gave up the climat name. Starting from the 2020 vintage, the wine was bottled under the name Hommage à Louis. As the demarcation was subsequently revised in favor of the estate, Les Clos was set to return to the range starting from the 2023 vintage, while a 2023 official sheet still documents Hommage à Louis.
