Domaine Jadot

Maison Louis Jadot is a wine merchant and producer based in Beaune, Burgundy. Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, it produces wines from its own estates and from grapes sourced from the main Burgundian wine-growing regions, from the Côte d’Or to the Mâconnais and the Beaujolais. The company is owned by the Kopf family; Frédéric Barnier oversees the winemaking.

Histoire du domaine

The Jadot family’s history in the wine industry in Beaune dates back to 1826, with the acquisition of the Clos des Ursules, a Beaune Premier Cru. In 1859, Louis Henry Denis Jadot purchased the wine merchant’s firm Lemaire-Fouleux and renamed it after himself. His son, Louis Baptiste Jadot, continued to expand the business and reinvested in the acquisition of vineyards, particularly Premiers Crus and Grands Crus in the Côte d’Or. On Louis Baptiste’s death in 1939, his son Louis Auguste Jadot took over the management of the company and expanded into export markets, including the United States. André Gagey joined the company in 1954 as Louis Auguste Jadot’s deputy, before becoming managing director following the latter’s death in 1962. In 1970, André Gagey recruited the oenologist Jacques Lardière, who went on to become the company’s technical director. In February 1985, Maison Louis Jadot was acquired by the owners of Kobrand Fine Wine & Spirits, the Kopf family. Pierre-Henry Gagey chaired the company from 1992 to 2023. Frédéric Barnier joined Louis Jadot as technical director in 2010 and succeeded Jacques Lardière in overseeing winemaking in 2012. Since 1 January 2023, Thomas Seiter has been chairman of Maison Louis Jadot and Thibault Gagey has been its managing director.

Parcelle & terroir

Griotte-Chambertin

Griotte-Chambertin is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated terroir, situated entirely within the small lieu-dit "En Griotte" in Gevrey-Chambertin. The vines occupy the piedmont of a small east-facing amphitheater, on a relatively steep and very stony slope. The shallow, underdeveloped soils, generally carbonated and well-draining despite their clay content, overlie scree deposits mixed with red clays and silts. The substrate consists of hard Bajocian limestone, notably entroquitc limestone.

Origin of the vineyard name
The name derives from the Burgundian "cras" or "criot", usually designating very stony terrain, rather than directly from the fruit known as the griotte cherry.

Histoire de la parcelle

The reputation of the climat, adjacent to Clos de Bèze, appears established as early as the 18th century, its wines being expensive at the time and often associated with Chambertin. At the beginning of the 20th century, they were commonly marketed under the name "Griotte-Chambertin". A 1931 ruling by the Dijon court recognized this appellation of origin and established its geographical boundaries, prior to the official recognition of the AOC by the decree of July 31, 1937.
